'San Francisco Chronicle' Names Emilio Garcia-Ruiz EIC

The San Francisco Chronicle has tapped Washington Postmanaging editor Emilio Garcia-Ruiz as its next editor-in chief. Garcia-Ruiz takes on his new role September 21.

Garcia-Ruiz has been WaPo's managing editor since 2013, but spent more than 20 years with the newspaper, also serving as its editor for strategic projects, in which he led the creation of mobile apps, ebooks and website development. He was also WaPo’s local editor, sports editor and deputy sports editor.

Previously, Garcia-Ruiz held roles with the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Telemundo 64, Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register.

In his new role, Garcia-Ruiz will oversee all news and content across print and digital properties for the Chronicle.

“Emilio has an impressive track record of innovation and producing great journalism on all platforms,” Hearst Newspapers President Jeff Johnson stated. “As we continue to develop our digital and video strategies, his experience and leadership will greatly benefit the Chronicle and the communities we serve.”

San Francisco Chronicle Publisher Bill Nagel noted: “[Garcia-Ruiz’s] dedication to rigorous journalism will be invaluable to the Chronicle as we build on our growing audience base.”

Garcia-Ruiz takes over the Chronicle from Audrey Cooper, who departed in June to lead WNYC as editor-in-chief.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s 155-year-old legacy is one of hard-hitting journalism, compelling storytelling and critical front-line reporting for the communities that trust and depend on it,” stated Garcia-Ruiz. “I am honored to lead the talented newsroom team and excited to further our mission and commitment to quality news.”
