Currently there are two days vying to become a national holiday for marijuana. One is April 20, a.k.a. Weed Day, or 4/20. The other is one we’re about to hit, Green Wednesday or Danksgiving. (The word is a portmanteau of “dank,” slang for high quality weed, and the holiday.)

A survey from Ayr Wellness and market research firm Suzy found that 90% of cannabis consumers plan to buy as much Thanksgiving weed on Green Wednesday as they did last year. Some 70% said they would be purchasing cannabis to share with family and friends on Thanksgiving.

According to the survey, cannabis consumers expect to spend $112 on average during the holiday season and nearly a quarter plan to spend more than that.

While major marketers steer clear of Danksgiving, Cannabox, a weed box subscription supplier, is having a Black Friday sale, offering 15% off everything in stock.

Such sales lend credence to the claim that Green Wednesday is the weed shopper’s Black Friday. Online marijuana sales on Green Wednesday rose 78% over the average for the previous three Wednesdays, according to Jane Technologies, a company that markets sales technologies to 2,800 dispensaries in 38 states.

Currently, 21 states and the District of Columbia have legalized the adult use of marijuana for recreational purposes. According to a 2021 Pew Research poll, 91% Americans believe cannabis should be legalized to some degree, and only 8% said marijuana should not be legal at all.
