CBS Wins The Week As Sweeps Month Approaches

On the cusp of May sweeps, CBS edged ahead of NBC in the latest Nielsens, with five of the top 10 shows. NBC had four and ABC one, the first time it's had an entertainment show in the top 10 recently.

With a series of specials and nostalgia shows planned for May sweeps, CBS got the ball rolling with an Everybody Loves Raymond special, “First Six Years,” last week. It was ranked eighth for the week, with a 15 share and a 6 household rating.

The top shows for the week were the standards: E.R. (NBC), CSI (CBS), Friends (NBC), Survivor (CBS) and Law and Order (NBC). ABC's The Bachelor finale ranked sixth, with Friends (NBC), Raymond (CBS), 60 Minutes (CBS) and the CBS Sunday Movie rounding out the top 10.

Cable winners for the most recent week were Osbournes (MTV), WWF Entertainment (TNN), TBS Original Movie Disappearance and Kids Choice (Nick). Osbournes scored a 4.1 household with 4.3 million viewers.

The top syndicated shows for the most recent week were Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Friends, Seinfeld and Raymond. Wheel had an 8.9 household rating with 9.4 million viewers.

The sports leader for the most recent week was Fox NASCAR Winston Cup, which had a 16 share and 7.0 household, beating the NBA playoffs (NBC), with the top game at 11/5.9. The NBA playoffs had three of the top five sports shows. WWF Smackdown (UPN) rounded out the top five.

CBS had a 14 share/8.3 household for the week, beating NBC (13/7.9), ABC (10/6.1) and Fox (8/4.8).

The May sweeps, with ratings that will help determine ad rates, will feature a variety of old time shows reworked for today. After Carol Burnett and I Love Lucy retrospectives succeeded last fall for CBS, The Cosby Show, Mary Tyler Moor, The Honeymooners, L.A. Law, Laverne & Shirley and That's Incredible will make comebacks this month. Series finales for Ally McBeal (Fox) and other shows will also run in May.
