Ira Teinowitz reports that U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) intends to challenge U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) for the chairmanship of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which could have an
impact on direct-to-consumer drug advertising. Although both have questioned the merits of DTC drug advertising, Waxman has been the more proactive in trying to limit it.
"If Rep. Waxman
does become chair, we have to be prepared for immediate scrutiny on FDA matters," says Adonis Hoffman, general counsel of the American Association of Advertising Agencies. "DTC becomes front and
center."
