Despite global economic upheaval, worldwide mobile messaging services revenues will increase from $151 billion in 2008 to more than $212 billion by 2013, according to ABI Research.

The report argues that a growing number of mobile subscribers view messaging as a more efficient means of communication than voice services. As such, mobile services will remain a necessity in difficult economic times, especially since workers who are laid off need mobile access to help them find work.

Mobile messaging accounts for 85% of all data service revenue regardless of region, and will provide the bulk of data sales for many years, according to ABI.--Mark Walsh
