Universal Music Group might not re-up with Apple's iTunes, according to press reports. Instead of signing another two-year contract allowing iTunes to sell Universal tracks for 99 cents each, the music company whose roster includes U2 and Amy Winehouse, apparently is mulling forging a shorter-term deal with Apple.

Faced with user pushback after revising its site, YouTube announced on its blog it was restoring a feature that allows users to browse videos by categories and to easily see which videos within particular categories were most often viewed, discussed and rated by other users.

Mobile TV is gaining ground with consumers, but likely not as fast as media companies would prefer. A new study by mobile research firm Telephia, released two days before the debut of the Apple iPhone, reveals that 8.4 million people in the United States subscribed to mobile video services during the first quarter. While that figure marks a 155% increase from last year's 3.3 million, it represents just 3.6% of all mobile subscribers.

In a concession to Google, Microsoft has agreed to modify its Vista operating system to make it easier for people to replace its own desktop search engine with Google's. But the move, coming as Google and Microsoft continue to trade barbs over which company poses more of a monopolistic threat, might not satisfy Google.
