Google Looks Into Crystal Ball

Search engines provided insight into the outcome of the presidential elections last year by tracking and compiling search queries. Chief Economist Hal Varian, and Decision Support Engineering Analyst Hyunyoung Choi believe queries on Google's search engine can help predict economic activity, too.

Varian and Choi have published a paper called "Predicting the Present with Google Trends," which highlights the belief that Google Trend data can improve forecasts for automotive, home, and retail sales. Google Trend data also could help marketers plan better SEO and marketing campaigns because the two suggest the data identifies "turning points" in the economy.
