Brendan Ripp Named Publisher, 'Sports Illustrated'

The top-level shakeup at Time Inc. continued with the announcement that Brendan Ripp has been named publisher of Sports Illustrated and SI.com. He succeeds Frank Wall, who announced Tuesday that he is leaving the company to become senior vice president for national sales at Turner Sports.
 
Son of Time Inc. CEO Joe Ripp, Brendan Ripp previously served as vice president of advertising sales and marketing at Fortune magazine. Before that, he was publisher of Time, Time.com and Life.com from May 2010 to October 2012, as well as publisher of Money from December 2010 to October 2012.

Ripp began his career as an undergraduate intern at Sports Illustrated in 1996.
 
According to Time Inc. the decision to promote Brendan Ripp was made by Todd Larsen, Time Inc. executive vice president and group president for News and Sports, and Mark Ford, president of the Sports group, without reference to Ripp’s father. Joe Ripp was named CEO of Time Inc. in September 2013, and previously served as CFO for Time Inc., Time Warner, and AOL from 1995 to 2004.
 
Earlier this week, Time Inc. announced several major changes in the editorial leadership for some of its biggest titles. Jess Cagle, who previously served as editor of Entertainment Weekly, is taking over as editor of People, replacing longtime editor Larry Hackett. Cagle will also become editorial director of Entertainment Weekly, overseeing a new editor at the title, who has yet to be appointed. As part of the shakeup, Time Inc. style and entertainment group editor Mark Golin is also leaving the company.
 
Last year, the company moved to lower the barrier between business and editorial operations by having magazine editors report to division presidents. In November, it circulated an RFP indicating it plans to “dramatically expand its native ad business,” seeking to enlist a partner for the design, development and launch of a new native ad platform
