"Four More Years" (Well, One More, Anyway)

It’s been three years since I’ve written one of these Red, White & Blogs, and I’m using the occasion to reintroduce the column and introduce you to its new columnist, Philip Rosenstein, an enterprising young journalist who happens to have a fascination with politics and media.

Rosenstein, who is also founder of WhiteHousePress.com, will edit and curate Marketing Politics Daily, a new short-run publication from MediaPost that will run through the 2016 elections.

He won’t be doing it alone.

The rest of the MediaPost team -- and hopefully, many of you readers -- will also contribute from time to time, because aren’t we all enamored by politics -- and media? I know I am, and over the years it has been by far my favorite beat.

I first got to cover it during Campaign 1984, especially Ronald Reagan’s reelection campaign, and all the amazing Madison Avenue talents that contributed to it, officially or unofficially, as part of the “Tuesday Team.”

It was an amazing early beat for a young journalist, and I got to see first hand how media -- and political media spin -- could affect the outcome of an election. Everything from Phil Dusenberry’s “Morning Again In America” to Hal Riney’s “There’s A Bear In The Woods,” plus all the blocking and tackling along the way.

It was in the days before Big Data, real-time polling, political DSPs and DMPs, and more about the pure art of persuasion than I think Campaign 2016 looks to be shaping up to be. But we shall see.

Personally, I’m hoping to play a big role in that coverage, too, because it is one of the parts of the business that has fascinated me most. In the meantime, please give Philip a welcome, and keep an eye peeled for RW&B and the rest of our daily coverage.

And if you have a mind to, please contribute something yourself.
