Facebook Updates Mobile, More Content Control

Facebook is updating its News Feed Preferences controls on mobile to allow users to further dictate the kinds of content they can scroll through.

Users can select friends and pages that they want to prioritize, and any new content from those selected will show up at the top of their news feed whenever they log in. It’s a lot like the “starred friends” function on the site.

However, like every sword, the new functions are double-edged, making it easier for users to unfollow friends and pages.

The new dashboard controls are available today on iOS and will be rolling out on Android and Desktop within the next few weeks.

Facebook also shut down its Creative Labs section today, removing the apps that had been created under its umbrella from app stores. Apps developed by employees in the startup-like initiative included Slingshot, which was somewhat like Snapchat, Riff a collaborative video creation app, and group messaging app Rooms.

A company spokesperson told CNET: “Since their launches, we've incorporated elements of Slingshot, Riff and Rooms into the Facebook for iOS and Android apps.”

The company is starting to move away from app development and into more of the physical tech world with virtual reality and its beam-the-Internet-to-the-farthest-corners-of-the-globe-with-drones initiative.

Facebook says that it will continue to develop and support new apps, like Instagram’s Hyperlapse video and others.
