Net Viewers Watching--But Not TV

Almost two-thirds of Internet users watch at least some video online each week--but that probably isn't a TV episode.

News and user-generated content are the most popular categories, followed by movie trailers and music videos. TV shows come in at fifth place. This new data comes from a recent TV-Internet study by the Larchmont-based media researcher Horowitz Associates.

Only 16% of Internet users watch a TV show online. NBC and ABC are the most popular networks, with "Grey's Anatomy" the most popular show viewed on the Internet. Overall, video content viewed on the Web is up 36%.

Missing an episode originally aired on broadcast TV is the most-cited reason Internet users watch a show online. Eighteen percent say they watch an Internet show online after seeing it on broadcast TV the first time.

About the same number of users--20%--say they watch an episode online because of a recommendation from a friend. The smallest number of Internet users--18%--watch a TV episode of a show online and not on TV.

Mobile video watching is still a small part of the overall digital video market. Over one-quarter--27%--of Internet users have a cell with video capability. Of those, only one-third--35%--watch video on their devices at least once weekly, and 62% at least once monthly. The study says this is up from 8% a year ago.
