Last night I left the swanktastic Discovery post-Upfront reception to attend a media tasting at Exchange Bar. What does media taste like? Calamari, mozzarella sticks, and Buffalo wings, duh.

I walked into the Frederick P. Rose Hall, grabbed my press packet and headed to the front of the room, feeling pretty special to see that the press corral was right behind the roped-off seats "reserved for friends of Oprah Winfrey." Yep, that was Gayle King sitting three rows up. As I squeezed into my seat next to a Fox Networks reporter, I saw the infamous locks of Jessica Simpson, dressed in gold, enter the auditorium. Smack dab in spring break tourist central, on probably the most beauteous night yet this year, the Advertising Club-sponsored International ANDY Awards warmed up the chilled Times Center, dumping into its belly the easily bruised egos, the Technicolor daydreams, and the adver-spys of the NYC advertising industry. Frothy beverages were thrown with reckless abandon down the throats of those guests attempting to erase the burn of storyboards nixed, while others huddled in snark-sprayed cliques, tickling each others' ears with the seeds of competition. If you're in NYC today, I hope it's having the same effect on you as it is on me. I can't stop smiling, I want to hug every flower and weirdo, and I can't think of any other place to live and work. I'm excited about hopping back into the fickle media and advertising party coverage scene, which seems so much more enjoyable when, at the end of the night, I can walk home with the warm breath of NYC nudging my neck under the never dark enough sky. I must have space madness, because of all the years I've lived in NYC, I have never heard of The Explorers Club. Had I known of this place, a clubhouse for those afflicted with extreme curiosity, I would have applied -- I mean, outer boroughs count, right? In fact, I'd say anyone who frequents the social scene in media and advertising deserves honorary membership -- you're lucky to emerge from this scene unscathed.
