Univision Partners With Truveo On Search

Univision Interactive Media has partnered with Truveo to provide its audience with improved video search capabilities.

Per the deal, "our users can easily search and find Spanish-language videos worldwide," said Kevin Conroy, president of Univision Interactive Media.

Other Truveo partners include AOL Video, AOL Search, CBS Radio, CNET's Search.com, SFGate.com and Sports Illustrated Vault. First launched in 2000, Univision.com attracted some 40 million visits, 395 million page views and over 13 million video streams last month.

Today, more than two-thirds of Hispanic adults are online, with Internet penetration among Hispanics growing every year for the past five years.

Univision.com will use Truveo's APIs to let users search for videos on both Univision.com and from across the Web, including user-generated content from YouTube, Dailymotion and others as well as video from major media brands such as ABC, BBC, CNN, Disney and ESPN.

In addition, Truveo's APIs enable Web site owners to create applications with video search and discovery features that build on Truveo's leading video search technology and extensive index of more than 400 million videos.

Founded in 2004 as a search engine to power other Web sites, Truveo was purchased by AOL in 2006. Since then, the brand has experienced an equal measure of successes and failures.

In 2007, Truveo lost a prized partner in digital entertainment services company RealNetworks, which decided to shift its video search duties to blinkx.

More recently, AOL's recently appointed CEO Tim Armstrong was reportedly considering placing Truveo -- along with other more recently acquired assets -- into separate ventures, which could potentially attract outside investment.
