Tribune Publishing is shuttering
its Spanish-language newspaper, Hoy, on December 13.
Chicago’s Latino community is estimated to comprise about one-third of the Windy City's 2.7 million
residents.
Hoy launched in Chicago as a daily in 2003, but has been decreasing in size. Since 2017, it has published as a weekly.
The Chicago Tribune Guild said it was “deeply disappointed that Tribune Publishing is shutting down Hoy, which has gone beyond stereotypes and
provided meaningful news to the vast body of Spanish-speakers in our region. This is a disservice to our journalists, our readers and our company."
Tribune stated that
affected employees would have a chance to take open posts inside the company.
While the Chicago version of Hoy is owned by Tribune, the Los Angeles and San Diego
Hoy newspapers are owned by Patrick Soon-Shiong, who also owns the Los Angeles Times.
Tribune Publishing added that it would “aggressively
explore” other opportunity to meet the needs of the Hispanic community.
