New DirecTV Set-Top Box Offers Aggregated Functionality

DirecTV has introduced a new set-top box that allows its satellite and internet customers to search and access live and on-demand shows and thousands of apps without having to switch inputs.

The device, called Gemini, is designed to respond to viewers’ growing demand for a more seamless experience and position DirecTV as “the premiere super-aggregator in the U.S. pay-TV market,” according to the company.

Any customer with a wireless connection can use the device, which also allows for watching in 4K, and comes with an integrated Google voice remote. Other features include SignalSaver, which lets users switch from satellite to internet.

Gemini replaces DirecTV’s longstanding Genie device. Customers who upgrade from Genie to Gemini can retain their TV settings, scheduled recordings and DVR content.

Verizon-owned Fios launched its own aggregation device last year.
