Shutterstock, OpenAI Pen A New 6-Year Deal

Shutterstock has signed a new six-year agreement with OpenAI, deepening the existing relationship between the two firms.

As part of the arrangement, OpenAI has access to additional Shutterstock training data and meta data. And Shutterstock will receive priority access to new OpenAI technology, while leveraging DALL-E’s capabilities in Shutterstock.com.

The deal also will help bring generative AI capabilities to mobile users through Shutterstock’s “newly acquired GIPHY platform.”

In addition, synthetic editing capabilities will allow Shutterstock customers to edit and transform images in the Shutterstock library.

“This extended collaboration not only enhances the capabilities of our image models but also empowers brands, digital media, and marketing companies to unlock transformative possibilities in content creation and ideation,” says Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI.

Shutterstock has also introduced a Contributor Fund, an initiative that it says has compensated hundreds of thousands of artists for the role their content IP has played in training Shutterstock’s generative technology. It also  compensates them with ongoing royalties tied to licensing activity for newly generated assets, the company says.

Moreover, Shutterstock has collaborated with such firms as NVIDIA, Meta, LG and others to develop generative AI tools and standards for creators across 3D, images and text.
