• Freeview Connect To Offer Catch-Up Television
    The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 are to spend more than GBP100m on a new Internet-connected version of Freeview that will offer catch-up services through iPlayer, ITV Player and 4OD. Most of their support for YouView, which is sold alongside BT and TalkTalk Internet subscriptions, has been dropped. Catch-up services are already available on pay-tv and through the latest Internet-connected televisions and games consoles, but Freeview Connect will cater to those without subscriptions and the latest equipment.
  • Pinterest Launches Self-Service Promoted Pins
    Pinterest is launching a self-service Promoted Pins service to make it easier for advertisers to promote messages to its users -- comScore figures suggest traffic was up 17% in April, hitting 55m visitors. The San Francisco company is also reported by The Financial Times to be investing in better analytics to improve its service to advertisers. Self service Promoted Pins are currently being trialled in the USA and are expected to be rolled out to the UK, France and Japan.
  • RAPP Bolsters Digital Retail Offer With Haygarth Purchase
    Omnicom's multichannel marketing agency, RAPP, has bought brand and retail specialist agency Haygarth. The purchase is believed to be designed to improve RAPP's offer in the rapidly growing digital shopper and consumer goods space. RAPP CEO Marco Scognamiglio commented: "Haygarth adds further depth to RAPP's capabilities and knowledge in navigating the customer journey for each client. Together, we will create experiences for clients that matter to consumers and inspire them to take action."
  • Regent Street To Turn on iBeacons
    Regent Street is set to embrace iBeacons from the end of the month. Hamleys, Armani, Longchamp and Hackett have already installed iBeacons in their Regent Street stores ahead of an iPhone app being made available by The Crown Estate, which owns the famous shopping street. It is expected that every shop will join the scheme, which will be promoted to shoppers via street signs. Those who download the app will be sent discounts and offers.
  • Amazon Expected To Launch Smartphone This Month
    The Amazon versus Apple battle looks set to intensify with rumours that Amazon is to launch a smartphone at an event to be held on June 18th. Bloomberg claims to have spoken to someone connected with the launch, and the suggestion is backed up by an Amazon tweet for the event featuring a picture of a mobile phone bearing its logo. Bloomberg reported back in 2012 that Amazon was working on developing a smartphone based on Google's Android operating system.
  • London Can Lead The Global Internet Of Things
    The London start-up community is well positioned to be a global leader in developing the Internet of Things, claims Katy Turner, the newly appointed CMO of Tech City. It has already paired with the Technology Strategy Board to release a GBP1m European grant fund to encourage entrepreneurs to build Internet of things-based services. The competition, unveiled in March, is open to the cluster of companies in the London and Cambridge, but will soon go national.
  • First Voice Recognition Banner Aims To Cut Food Waste
    Sainsbury's and Google have developed the first interactive banner ad to use voice recognition. The technology is part of the Sainsbury's Food Rescue campaign, which helps people avoid waste by offering recipe ideas for ingredients. After clicking on the banner, either on mobile or a computer, consumers are asked to say which ingredients they have. Recipe ideas are then offered so the food can be used rather than discarded.
  • Danone Seeks Digital Advertising Agency
    Danone is calling a pitch for an agency to handle digital advertising for its baby nutrition division, which includes Cow & Gate and Aptamil. The Real Adventure currently handles the bulk of Web, mobile, social and CRM work for the division and DigitasLBi handles SEO. Both are believed to be involved in the pitch, which is at the earliest stage.
  • InBev Calls European Media Review
    Anheuser-Busch InBev is calling a European media review as it looks to consolidate its activity across the region. The brewing giant owns Stella Artois, Beck's and Budweiser. The UK's GBP14m account is currently handled by Vizeum, part of the Dentsu Aegis Network. Across the EU and Russia multiple agencies hold briefs, including Havas Media, MediaCom and Publicis Groupe. The review is expected to last several months.
  • Camelot Ditches Havas Media In Media Consolidation Process
    Camelot UK Lotteries has parted company with Havas Media, after sixteen years. The National Lottery operator is seeking to consolidate its media business and has created a short list featuring OMD, Vizeum and Mindshare. Havas Media did not make the list and neither did Publicis Groupe's Starcom.
