At CES: Sharp Promises Bigger TVs, EBook Service

  • January 5, 2011
LAS VEGAS--With the goal of becoming the central TV in the home, executives with Sharp Electronics introduced a 70-inch television screen (which provides 62% more viewing area than the typical 55-inch screen) available for consumers later this year.

"We are dedicated to bringing people together with bigger televisions built on Quattron technology," said Sharp chief marketing officer Bob Scaglione at the company's press briefing at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "We want to be that trophy television that you bring your friends over to watch."

After promising that bigger was better, Sharp unveiled its entry into the tablet world. The Galapagos emedia tablet will include a touchscreen and an e-store giving consumers access to e-books, movies, games and music, as well as timed delivery of newspapers and magazines. Pricing and exact date of the tablet and e-retail had not yet been determined, although they were promised in the second half of the year.--Aaron Baar
