Twitter has announced an update that will introduce auto-playing video and animated GIFs to users' timelines. The update will initially be implemented on iOS and Web with Android getting the changes at a later date. The changes will mean that all native videos, GIFs and Vines will automatically play with the sound muted by default, as is currently the case on Facebook and Instagram. In a blog announcing the changes, Twitter Senior Product Manager David Regan said videos will be larger and in a more media-centric format.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the ads, which appeared on the @WillHillBet Twitter feed, breached CAP codes that state marketing communications for gambling must not include children or be of "particular appeal to children or young people." One ad featured an image of a child jumping in the air holding a golf club and a ball with the words: "#TheMasters has started! #yippee".

Former "Guardian" deputy editor Janine Gibson has joined BuzzFeed UK as editor in chief. Gibson, who left "The Guardian" last month after unsuccessfully applying to replace Alan Rusbridger as editor-in-chief, starts on 1 August. She was editor of "Guardian" US during the time of the Edward Snowden revelations two years ago and more recently was put in charge of the Guardian Web site. In an announcement to staff, current BuzzFeed Editor in Chief Luke Lewis said he would be moving to become executive editor.

Traditional news outlets face an increasingly uphill struggle to make money as readers move to mobile devices, giving Facebook, Google and Apple increasing control, according to a new international survey. The use of mobile devices to access news on a weekly basis surged in the last year from 37% of respondents to almost half (46%), according to a 12-country report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ).

Hit US shows are fuelling huge growth in subscriptions to online broadcasters, putting pressure on traditional satellite and cable TV providers. Collectively more than six million people are now signed up to Netflix, Now TV and Amazon instant video, according to IHS, the analysis company, equivalent to one in four households. At the beginning of 2012 there was not a single mainstream online broadcaster.

High street fashion brand Ted Baker has created its first ever virtual store and could soon roll out the concept across its estate. The virtual store, which was designed by virtual reality pioneers Avenue Imperial using high resolution 360-degree panoramic photography, digitises the new Shoreditch, Commercial Street-based Ted Baker & Moore store. The store already hosts shop window LCD screens, which use motion sensors to simultaneously interact with passersby through interactive games while promoting products.

Bacardi is switching its focus to brands rather than categories as part of a number of changes to its marketing structure, including the launch of marketing Centers of Excellence (CoEs), the appointment of Shane Hoyne as Europe CMO and the departure of Dima Ivanov as global CMO. The company is to introduce CoEs in Europe and North America headed by a CMO. They will report to Bacardi CEO Mike Dolan on global brands such as Bacardi and Martini and regional presidents on regional and local brands.

The brewing giant has worked with Wieden+Kennedy since 2010. The agency's Amsterdam, New York and Shanghai offices all created work for the Heineken brand, while Amsterdam handled the global creative account for Desperados. Instead, the global work will be handled by Publicis Worldwide, while local work will be produced by a mix of local agencies. Jan Derck van Karnebeek, the chief commercial officer at Heineken, said: "After five years this is a good time to go our separate ways."

Google has begun testing a new system of 'slow to load' yellow warning signs for its mobile search results, alerting browsers to tardy content before they waste precious seconds staring at a twirling load symbol. Not surprisingly, bandwidth-heavy applications such as YouTube are among the biggest offenders, but now Android could be notified of this fact by a little yellow warning sign on search results before they dive in.

The introduction of smart meters to British households over the next five years will improve the relationship consumers have with energy brands such as EDF Energy, Scottish Power and Npower, according to Claire Maugham, director of policy and communications at Smart Energy GB. Smart Energy was set up to promote the government's UK-wide rollout of smart meters -- which communicate directly with energy suppliers to help people better manage usage and bills -- by 2020.
