Apple paid GBP12.9m in UK corporation tax last year as the iPhone maker continued to book sales through its international headquarters in Ireland. Accounts for the year to September 26 showed that the tax bill for Apple's two UK entities rose 9% last year from GBP11.8m from a year earlier.

Google is planning a shake-up of the smartphone market by releasing its own handset, a move that would tighten its grip on mobile software and see it compete directly with the iPhone. The technology giant is in discussions with mobile operators about releasing a Google-branded phone that will extend the company's move into hardware.

The UK government is poised to hold a meeting with business leaders this week to discuss the implications of Britain's exit from the European Union. The roundtable meeting with UK firms will be chaired by the business secretary on Tuesday with representatives from the British Chambers of Commerce, CBI and the Federation of Small Businesses set to attend.

Some companies are likely to impose a hiring freeze following Britain's vote to leave the European Union, according to a leading business group. The Institute of Directors (IoD) surveyed 1,000 of its members and found that a quarter planned to freeze recruitment. The results suggested that almost a third would keep hiring at the same pace, with 5% planning to cut jobs.

The value of a UK pound has been plunging in the wake of Britain's vote to leave the EU. As it fell in its most dramatic drop ever, people scrambled to find out information about the currency. Searches for "buy gold" are up 500%.
