Havas Media Manchester has been awarded the media planning and buying business for Staples - the global retail supply chain. The agency won the account following an international competitive pitch through Havas Media International Paris, against the account's incumbent Carat and ZODG London.

Asia-Pacific will overtake North America as the world's biggest market for digital advertising spend for the first time this year, according to Strategy Analytics. The shift in spending power is driven by China, the second biggest national market after the US, which will increase spend 25.1% to $22.36bn. This is almost double the UK, the third biggest at $12.88bn, which is an 8% rise.

Bailey is replaced by Marco Gobbetti, currently the chairman and chief executive of LVMH-owned luxury brand Celine. Bailey takes on a new role as president and chief creative officer. Burberry has been widely praised for innovation in its product lines and marketing since Bailey took the top job two years ago, but the company has plummeted in value.

Pinterest is on a mission to get brands and agencies in the UK using its platform, with a raft of new features and measuring tools in the pipeline in a bid to attract a larger chunk of ad budgets its way.

The European Parliament has voted against a set of rules intended to safeguard "net neutrality" in the EU. A series of amendments to a regulation on how internet traffic is managed in Europe were all rejected by MEPs. Proponents of net neutrality, who demand that web traffic be treated equally by networks, have already criticised the move.

Entertainment One has become the first company to make commercial use of Nearby Notifications, Google's beacon tech, to promote the upcoming remake of The BFG. It has dotted 50 six-foot "dream jars" around London landmarks, featuring the childhood dreams of celebrities. Any Android user with Bluetooth switched on will receive a notification when they're within 15 metres of a jar.

EE will offer its monthly mobile subscribers six months free access to BT Sport in what is the first major content tie-up between the two companies since BT's takeover of the mobile operator. The promotion will pull in more than 15 million subscribers to BT Sports and launches with a "multimillion-pound" advertising campaign.

Some of the world's largest telecom companies have signed a 5G manifesto, aimed at driving forward the deployment of next-generation mobile networks. The manifesto pledges to launch fast 5G mobile networks in every country within the European Union by 2020. However, it also says current net neutrality regulations could hamper innovation and cause "significant uncertainties."

MasterCard is shifting from traditional above-the-line advertising to focus on real-time promotions as its CMO Raja Rajamannar looks to ensure its marketing builds not just the brand but the business, as well. He had found that too much was going into "warm, fuzzy" advertising that built the brand but not the business.
