• BBC IPlayer TV Licence Loophole Closed
    Anyone attempting to use iPlayer to catch up on their favourite show on Thursday will, for the first time, be presented with a message telling them they must have a TV licence even if they are not watching live. Legislation passed this year that makes it illegal to watch BBC catch-up content without a licence. The move is designed to help the BBC plug a GBP150m gap in its finances.
  • EU Guidelines Warn Against Mobile Ad Blocking
    Plans by mobile phone operators to block ads for customers across their networks are in doubt after the EU said they breached net neutrality legislation. Updated guidelines issued by the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (Berec) this week state that advertising should not be blocked by networks, something that mobile operator Three has already trialled in the UK.
  • Tim Cook Blasts EU Tax Ruling As 'Maddening'
    Apple chief executive Tim Cook says the European Commission ruling that Apple should pay billions of euros in back taxes to the Republic of Ireland is "maddening" and "political." He told Irish broadcaster RTE that Apple had not been given preferential tax breaks in Ireland. The EU ruling said Apple had been given EUR13bn of "illegal" tax benefits.
  • Uber Announces Electric Fleet For London
    Fully electric cars will now be available on the Uber app as the taxi firm tries to help tackle air pollution in London. With the first battery-powered vehicles hitting the capital's roads from Wednesday, the company said more than 50 fully electric cars will be available on the app in the capital by the end of September. It plans to introduce the vehicles to at least one other UK city this autumn.
  • Three's Ad-Blocking Trial Could Be Breaching Net Neutrality Rules
    Three's ad-blocking service may be considered a breach of net neutrality, after new European guidelines stated operators should not "restrict" ads on mobile. The new rules were published by the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (Berec) this week, and are intended to act as guidance on implementing net neutrality to local watchdogs such as Ofcom in the UK.

    Soon-to-launch Sky Mobile has appointed Adam & Eve/DDB to handle digital and social after a competitive pitch that took place over the summer. Sky Mobile will launch later this year after signing a deal with O2. Adam & Eve/DDB will handle social and digital for the new brand, while Sky's incumbent creative agency WCRS will handle advertising. No pitch was held for the advertising business.
