Honda CR-V Tops Kelley Blue Book Best SUV List

The Honda CR-V’s winning streak with Kelley Blue Book’s editors continues.

The vehicle tops KBB’s "10 Best SUVs Under $25,000 for 2016" list, its second consecutive year in the top spot. The vehicle also was KBB’s "Small SUV Best Buy for 2016" and one of the "16 Best Family Cars of 2016."

America’s love affair with the SUV continues, as small utility vehicles remain the most popular segment among new-car shoppers, says Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book’s

Honda’s small SUV is roomy, reliable, refined, efficient and just about everything else you might be seeking from a small SUV, he says.

“Every one of the 10 is a terrific SUV,” Nerad tells Marketing Daily. “The CR-V is a very good vehicle for a young family, but there are others on the list for larger families. We like the CR-V’s combination of low cost, high fuel economy and great resale.”

The vehicles on the list all have a Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price that starts below $25,000 as of February 2016. Updated weekly and based on current market conditions like vehicle availability, local demand and seasonal buying trends, the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price shows shoppers what others have been paying for a new car recently and is included in’s Price Advisor tool, which provides range-based market pricing.

There are no newcomers, “which indicates that the segment is full of strong, high-value players,” Nerad says “There has not been a lot of product movement this year in compact SUVs, and they dominate this list due to price threshold.”

Others on the list are: Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sorrento, Subaru Forrester, Honda HR-V, Honda HR-V, Nissan Rogue, Jeep Renegade and Jeep Wrangler.

“I think one takeaway for marketers is the way challenger brands — Kia, Hyundai, Subaru — have been able to establish positions in the wake of massive media weight and momentum for traditional leaders like Toyota and Honda,” Nerad says.
