• Google Formally Charged By EU For Alleged Android Abuses
    Google has been formally charged with monopoly abuse over an alleged effort to crush rivals to its mobile search service and Android smartphone operating system. Margrethe Vestager, the European Commissioner for competition, accused Google of pursing "an overall strategy on mobile devices to protect and expand its dominant position in internet search."
  • HM Treasury Seeks Agency For GBP1 Coin Launch
    HM Treasury and The Royal Mint are looking for an advertising agency to promote the arrival of the new GBP1 coin, which launches next year. The 12-sided coin, which resembles the old threepenny bit, will go into circulation in March 2017. The government is looking for an agency to make the public and businesses aware of what they need to do to prepare for the launch.

    Facebook's UK chief Steve Hatch insists that changes to the order of user's Instagram timelines have support from both advertisers and users. The changes will mean that Instagram timelines will no longer feature the most recent posts first but the most relevant. It was based on insight from Instagram that found the average user misses 70% of their feed as "there's simply too much content."

    Paddy Power Betfair, Europe's biggest bookmaker, is planning to consolidate its estimated GBP40 million annual media spend into one agency. The pitch process is understood to be at an advanced stage, following the completion of the merger of Paddy Power and Betfair in February. M2M and MediaCom are the incumbents.

    Japanese brewing giant Asahi Group is set to become the first Asian brewer to gain a significant foothold in Europe, after it reached a deal to acquire the Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime brands from AB InBev. Analysts believe AB InBev's main motivation for the takeover was SABMiller's strong position in developing regions like Africa, where it is underrepresented.

    The use of legislation brought in to fight terrorism and serious crime against journalists has seen the UK slip four places down the World Press Freedom Index. The annual report by Reporters Without Borders ranks 180 countries according to the freedom they allow journalists. The UK ranks 38th and is behind countries such as Chile, Ghana and Uruguay.
  • Google Claims YouTube Ads Are More Effective Than TV
    Google has attacked the effectiveness of TV ads and called on advertisers to massively increase the amount they spend on YouTube. Matt Brittin, Google's top-ranking European executive, is set to unveil a report analysing ad campaigns across eight countries that show in 80% of cases YouTube ads were far more effective than TV ads in driving sales.
