  • Alibaba Buying Out Youku Tudou For $4.6B
    Alibaba has agreed to pay about $4.6 billion to buy the rest of video streaming service Youku Tudou. As Bloomberg Businessweek reports: “Ownership of Youku Tudou would help [Alibaba founder Jack] Ma deliver U.S. films and drama series to more than a third of China’s population as Alibaba battles Baidu Inc. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. for the attentions of Internet users.”  
  • Top 13 YouTube Stars Take In $54.5M
    Forbes has released its first-ever ranking of the top-paid YouTube stars. Collectively, the top 13 earners pulled in $54.5 million, with Felix Kjellberg, a.k.a., PewDiePie, pulling in $12 million. Writes Forbers: “These 13 DIY filmmakers -- directors, producers, actors all rolled into one -- have made millions doing what members of older generations may consider more play than work.”

    YouTube Gaming will let users livestream Android games straight from their mobile devices. And Google is launching a subscription service for individual YouTube Gaming channels, allowing fans to financially support their favorite streamers
  • YouTube Gaming Adds Paid Subscriptions
    YouTube Gaming just added paid subscriptions, or “sponsorships,” ars technica reports. “Sponsorships let users in over 40 countries go ad-free by paying a monthly fee of $3.99 through Google Wallet to directly support their favorite streamers,” it writes. “Like (rival) Twitch, subscribers get extra perks, namely ‘access to exclusive chat sessions’ and a chat badge that denotes them as paying subscribers.”  
  • I Read This At Starbucks: Product Placement In Decline
    Product placement is declining, possibly because there are so many other places to hawk wares.  There were 4,455 product placements made during last year’s broadcast TV season, a 3% drop from the year before and down 20% from 2012-2013.
