• Netflix Boasts Strong Q3
    In the third quarter, Netflix Inc added over 50% more subscribers than expected, the content company revealed this week. “The company’s performance represented a turnaround from the previous quarter of disappointing subscription growth,” Reuters reports. “Netflix, which has spent heavily to expand outside its home market, also said that it was on track to start harvesting ‘material global profits’ next year, even as it raised spending on original programming.”

  • Spotify CEO Assumes Chairmanship
    Spotify co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek is taking on the added role of chairman, Bloomberg reports. In turn, “Martin Lorentzon, a co-founder of Spotify, is stepping down from his role as chairman after 10 years,” it writes. The change is coming ahead of a planned initial public offering, which could come as soon as next year.
  • Video Streaming Startup Pluto TV Gets $30M
    Video streaming startup Pluto TV just has raised $30 million at a new valuation of $140 million. “The new funding comes from ProSieben of Germany, one of Europe’s largest independent media companies, and lifestyle media company Scripps Networks Interactive,” TechCrunch reports. “The additional capital will help to fuel Pluto TV’s expansion into the European market.”

    Shanghai-based Music.ly has 100 million users worldwide. Quickly, users can filter, edit and broadcast short video clips of their favorite songs and browse through millions of videos. The one problem is that many users don't use it every day. 
  • SAG-AFTRA Threatens Strike Against Game Makers
    The union announced it will go on strike against Activision Publishing; Blindlight; Corps of Discovery Films; Disney Character Voices; Electronic Arts Productions; Formosa Interactive; Insomniac Games; Interactive Associates; Take 2 Interactive Software; VoiceWorks Productions; and WB Games. Unless a deal is struck during bargaining sessions scheduled for the first part of this week, all games that went into production after Feb. 17, 2015 for those employers will be struck.

    SoulPancake is a social good video property founded in 2009 by actor-comedian Rainn Wilson  It reaches over 1.7 million subscribers and have accumulated over 300 million video views. Participant just closed its social minded cable network, PivotTV, which never gained much traction as a niche cable network at a time those lesser-viewed entities have a hard time cutting it. 
  • Facebook Adds Content To Apple TV, Google Chromecast
    Consumers can you can stream Facebook video content through Apple TV and Google Chromecast devices. “Support for the Apple TV is now available, along with other AirPlay-enabled devices,” Venture Beat reports. “If you have a Chromecast, you can now stream through your iOS device or your web browser -- casting from an Android device will be enabled ‘soon.’”  
  • New Veep Of Original Content At CBS All Access
    Dan Feldheim is the new vice president of original content for CBS All Access, joining from Fox. In his new role, Feldheim will focus on current and developing programming. CBS Corp. chairman Leslie Moonves said in March that CBS All Access plans to debut three or four new series per year. A new version of "Star Trek" will have its premiere on CBS TV, subsequent episodes will all be on All Access, starting early next year.
