'New York Daily News' Unveils Mobile App

NYDN-App-BThe New York Daily News has joined forces with MyCityWay to launch a new mobile app that combines editorial content from the venerable tabloid with an interactive city guide created by the app developer.

The free app, available for iOS and Android, offers users real-time location-based services and information, along with Daily News editorial content including national and local news, sports, entertainment coverage and photo galleries.

In addition to its city guide information including business and event listings, MyCityWay contributes real-time traffic, transit, and weather updates.

The app also includes a QR code reader, allowing users to interact with advertisers and editorial content from the print newspaper. Advertisers can geotarget messages and deliver special offers using timing and location data in combination with user interests, intent and behaviors.

Daily News President and CEO Bill Holiber noted that this capability “opens up new significant opportunities for advertisers who can help influence people at key decision points.”

Separately, MyCityWay’s local platform has also been incorporated into BMW Vehicles through its DriveNow system. However, the Daily News is its first newspaper partner.

Like other big newspapers, the Daily News is pushing to boost audiences for its digital properties, including its Web site and mobile channels, as it seeks to offset declining print circulation. According to the Alliance for Audited Media (previously known as the Audit Bureau of Circulations), in the six-month period ending September 2012, the Daily News had an average weekday print circulation of 383,835, compared to 344,755 for the New York Post. Including digital replica and non-replica editions, the Daily News had a circ of 535,875, while the Post had a circ of 522,868.
