Ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) and free, ad-supported streaming (FAST) services generated combined revenue of €15 million in 2022, triple 2021’s revenue, according to a joint study by audience-measurement firm Médiamétrie and media business consultant NPA Conseil.
The study estimates that first-half 2023 revenue reached €8 to €8.5 million.
Overall AVOD/FAST viewership gained 13 points in the 15+ demo last year, peaking at 69% among the 35-49 demo.
The domestic French market includes 292 FAST TV channels in French owned by 77 operators.
Eighteen of these represent 80% of the revenue. Top operator Mediawan, which has 15 channels, has partners including Pluto TV and Samsung TV.
More than half (54%) of French households owned a smart TV as of Q1 2023.
A separate new report, from Digital TV Research, estimates that Germany will have more SVOD subscriptions than the UK by the end of this year, and will increase its edge going forward (chart above).

The analysis forecasts 273 million SVOD subscriptions in Western Europe by 2029, up from 210 million by year-end 2023.
The UK will contribute 6 million of the total estimated 63 million new subscriptions, Germany 12 million, France 11 million, Italy 10 million and Spain 9 million.
“The UK is the most mature SVOD market in Western Europe. Germany, France, Italy and Spain will each add more subscriptions than the UK over coming years,” said Simon Murray, princiap analyst at Digital TV Research.
