By the end of 2011, Facebook had 432 million monthly active mobile users, according to an
updated s-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. While hard to believe, the social giant also revealed that just over 13% of these actives users accessed the social network exclusively through their mobile devices. This isn’t the first we’re learning of Facebook’s massive mobile footprint. “When the company filed for an initial public offering in February, it said it had more than 425 million mobile MAU in December 2011,” Inside Facebook reports. With the updated stats, however, Facebook is reporting year-over-year …

Potentially following the lead of YouTube, Hulu, and Netflix, Amazon could be getting into original content. “At least that is what appeared to be the case for a fleeting few hours March 6 on LinkedIn,” reports Fortune. “Joe Lewis, a new executive with the tech giant … briefly listed his title as Vice President of Original Television at Amazon.” (Lewis’ job title is currently listed as Vice President of Production at Amazon Studios.) The brief change follow reports that Amazon is looking for executives to lead creative projects through development. The company's California production studio, People's Production Company, is already in …

Netflix is reportedly in discussions with top cable companies about adding its online movie streaming service to their cable offerings. “In what would ratchet up its competition with HBO, the talks could lead to Netflix becoming available as another on-demand option for cable subscribers through their set-top boxes,” reports Reuters, citing sources. The cable companies could feasibly offer Netflix as an additional service option to their subscribers, and simply bill them accordingly. “Any partnership would be a major about-face for many in the traditional cable industry who had initially seen Netflix as a threat to their $100 billion-a-year business,” Reuters remarks. …

Elsewhere on the app front, Apple is in the process of adding a new category to its App Store. Called "Catalogs," some are speculating that the vertical could challenge -- or perhaps compliment -- those massive, mailbox-clogging product directories for which Pottery Barn, Victoria’s Secret, and Lands’ End are famous. Until now, catalog apps could be found within Apple’s App Store -- they just didn’t have their own domain. The change, at least according to catalog app makers, is significant. "Adding an app category is not something that Apple does lightly and we believe Apple's decision reflects the importance of …

Per a programming deal reached last fall, YouTube just added about 70 videos from Disney’s Disney Channel -- many of which are full-length episodes, are all free of charge. “They’re even fully embeddable … if you’ve got 22 minutes to catch up on Zack and Cody’s suite life,” reports AllThingsD’s Peter Kafka. While less sexy than the new genre of Web video programs that YouTube and its partners are pioneering, Kafka reminds us that repurposed, long-form content is a pretty good business. What’s more, kids’ obsessive viewing habits (and arguably low standards) make them an ideal demographic for any video business. …

Despite the best efforts of Google and its Android partners, research shows that Apple controls 73% of the tablet market. What’s more, as Forrester finds, no Android tablet maker can claim more than a 5% share against Apple. As TechCrunch notes, however, Forrester carried out its related research last September, i.e., before Amazon started selling its Kindle Fire tablet, and before Barnes & Noble released its own tablet. “These devices have proven to be forces in the market, and are already having an impact on sales of another device in the food chain, e-readers,” TechCrunch writes. Both tablets sold by …

Continuing to synchronize its services, Google will now let users save their searches across various devices using a universal “recent” icon. "Next time you are heading to a place you have recently searched for, no need to worry if you can't remember the address or phone number," Google software engineer Junichi Uekawa wrote in a Monday
blog post. Preempting privacy concerns, Uekawa also noted: "We provide this new convenience feature for users who have Web History enabled and are logged into Google when doing their search." As CNet explains, “This type of cross-device unification fits right in with Google’s …

Foursquare co-founder Naveen Selvadurai is leaving the company, he confirmed in a
blog post this weekend. Expressing a desire for something new, Selvadurai said he wasn’t quite sure what his next move would be. As for his continuing role at Foursquare, he said: “I’m on the board, I’ll still be advising, and I’m obviously going to be the [service’s] single most vocal user.” Having first uncovered the news, GigaOm’s Om Malik notes: “Selvadurai and Dennis Crowley started Foursquare together. Selvadurai worked on the first Foursquare iPhone app, but since then the company has added many more engineers and developers.” According …

Reshaping mobile’s global landscape, Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has agreed to buy California’s Amobee Inc. for $321 million. For Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, Amobee represents a toehold in the emerging field of mobile advertising. “SingTel expects to generate growth by expanding the mobile ads business to offer deals targeted at consumers, such as through coupons and loyalty programs as it reduces the reliance on traditional phone services,” Bloomberg explains. “Wireless operators are counting on the popularity of smartphones such as Apple Inc.’s iPhone to drive up usage of data and applications to revive profit growth.” The acquisition of Redwood, California-based …

Poaching talent is common between tech giants, but Yahoo needs all the brains it can hold onto. Alas, Prabhakar Raghavan, the highly regarded head of Yahoo Labs -- and until recently its head of strategy -- is leaving for Google. Worse yet, “the departure comes ahead of possibly deep cuts in his division, which is in charge of long-term research at the Silicon Valley Internet giant,” reports AllThingsD, citing sources. Confirming Raghavan’s departure -- but not the additional department cuts -- Yahoo said its CTO, Ash Munshi, will now head up Y Labs. It isn’t yet clear what Raghavan’s will …
