Logos are so yesterday. Which is probably why so many marketers design logos as if they haven't done it since first grade. To review, here is a list of things to do and not to do. Among them, avoid using too thin of a line weight; keep your logo simple and meaningful; keep it balanced and in proportion; stay away from fad typefaces that will soon be old-fashioned; and steer clear of the obvious in designing a logo, because it's probably overused.

Justin Bieber's perfume, Someday, has just been sold to Elizabeth Arden. The perfume was also the leading selling new fragrance of 2011. Later this year a second fragrance is due: Justin Bieber's Girlfriend. Bieber wants the fragrance sold as a not-for-profit venture to benefit charity, but Arden is obviously not in that category. Read on. But expect no further clarification on this than you got about the origins of humanity from "Prometheus."

Lexus hopes new products help it recover from last year's sharp sales slide. Long the U.S. luxury sales leader, Lexus suffered a sharp decline in 2011 under an assault by key German rivals compounded by the production cuts that followed Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami. The Toyota subsidiary wound up in third place for the year, behind both BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Lexus officials are anticipating a sales increase of as much as 25% for all of 2012, along with a several- point increase in market share.

Burger King is launching an ice cream sundae that adds bacon to the traditional mix of vanilla ice cream and swirls of hot fudge and caramel. It's part of a limited-edition summer menu that includes barbecue-inspired burgers and fries. The sundae is also garnished with a piece of thick-cut hardwood-smoked bacon for dipping.

The chairman of Esprit Holdings Ltd. has resigned a day after Chief Executive Officer Ronald Van der Vis quit. Esprit stock slumped 22%, its biggest drop since 1997. Hans-Joachim Koerber resigned as chairman and Raymond Or Ching Fai takes over, Esprit said after the market closed. The departures are the latest hurdle for the company that in September reported a 98% decline in fiscal year profit. The company said its brand had "lost its soul."

The Chicago Transit Authority will make a $1.8 million first-of-its-kind deal to offer fare passes on Groupon. Groupon is paying the transit agency $1.882 million, or $7.53 apiece, up front for 250,000 3-Day passes, which it will sell for $9, the CTA said in a release. The deal saves Groupon members $5 off the CTA's current $14 price tag for the passes, and could be offered as soon as the end of June, CTA said.

The unsettled economic climate in Europe has undermined General Motors' efforts to revitalize the company's operations, GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson said Tuesday. Fixing GM's operations in Europe remains the company's top priority, added Akerson following the maker's annual meeting. He noted GM of Europe has succeeded in striking new labor agreements with unions in both Poland and Great Britain and is "talking with unions in Germany" about possible concessions that could prove critical to GME's turnaround. GM had hoped its European operations would be back in the black by 2011 but they instead went $700 million …

Labatt Brewing Company threatened legal action against the Montreal Gazette last week if the paper would not take down a photograph from its website of cannibal-killer Luka Magnotta holding a bottle of Blue. Twitter got the story and what followed was several hours of online ridicule against the brewer. Labatt recanted. Labatt did get some sympathetic commentary. Writing in the Ottawa Citizen, Dan Gardner observed: "Labatt had good reason to worry. It still does."

Nike and rival Adidas are going toe-to-toe at the NBA Finals, but with a combined 21 of 27 players on the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder wearing kicks from Nike or a Nike division, including LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Chris Bosh, the battle may already have been decided.
