• Second Engineer Leaves GM
    General Motors engineering executive Jim Federico has retired. He is the second high-level engineer to depart in recent weeks. GM is shaking out its product development structure in the wake of its recall crisis. The 36-year GM veteran said he's leaving "to take on new engineering and design challenges outside of the auto industry," according to an internal e-mail.
  • Pom Wonderful Gives As Good As It Gets
    John Oliver clearly wasn't out to make marketing friends when his show Last Week Tonight debuted on HBO last month, dismissing Pom Wonderful as snake oil and suggested putting stickers on Pom's juice bottles saying it contains dogs. On Sunday night's episode, Oliver read a lengthy letter from Pom, which also sent the host a refrigerator and several cases of the drink.
  • Microsoft Is Planning Surface Event In New York
    Microsoft sent Engadget an invite for a Surface-related event on May 20, "A small gathering." "We really don't know much else aside from that," says the site. "But we're guessing a new tablet - possibly a mini Surface? - could be unveiled. All we do know is that we'll be there live and in person to tell you all about it."
  • Target CEO Steinhafel Steps Down
    Following a huge data breach that exposed the personal information of about 70 million customers last year, Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel is stepping down. In April, Target appointed a new chief information officer and announced plans for a chief information security officer and a chief compliance officer. Steinhafel will be replaced on an interim basis by CFO John Mulligan.
  • Uniqlo Eyes 5 Locations In Los Angeles
    Uniqlo will continue its expansion in the United States by entering the Los Angeles market. The Japanese retail powerhouse announced it will open five stores in the Los Angeles area, starting in September, with locations at South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa; Northridge Fashion Center, Northridge; and Glendale Galleria, Glendale.
  • Norwegian Air Taps M&C Saatchi As Global Agency
    Planning a big expansion, Norwegian Air has tapped the Stockholm office of M&C Saatchi as its first global advertising agency. The airline sent out RFPs in January and met around 15 agencies based in London and the Nordics. The goal is to build awareness in Northern Europe, Germany and North America. Norwegian is launching a series of low-cost long-haul flights from Gatwick Airport in July.
  • Judge Will Weigh GM Bankruptcy Fraud
    A federal bankruptcy judge will consider quickly whether General Motors committed bankruptcy fraud in 2009 by not disclosing ignition switch defects that are now linked to 13 deaths. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Gerber, who handled GM's 2009 bankruptcy restructuring, also ruled he won't block a hearing later this month on whether nearly 60 class-action lawsuits filed against GM should be merged.

  • Judges Say It's Hard To Say What A Juice Can Do
    Juice company POM Wonderful argued to an appeals court on Friday that U.S. feds who said the company's advertising was misleading were overstepping. Judges disagreed with that but did say it's hard to prove precisely what a juice can or can't do. The case follows an FTC claim that POM Wonderful ran deceptive ads in magazines, claiming disease-fighting qualities.
  • Hakeem, Etonic Reteam For Relaunch
    Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon won two titles with the Houston Rockets, a feat he is seeking to match as he takes on the NBA's best shoe brands via an alliance with Etonic, the company he endorsed as a rookie. The partnerships include a relaunch of The Dream shoe and a venture called Brand Dream by Etonic that will include footwear, apparel, accessories and multi-layered marketing.
