Hardee's and Carl's Jr. are known for unabashedly huge calorie counts aimed at pleasing younger coronary freewheelers. But now, using spelling as a metaphor, the Hardee's Food Systems chains have created websites with URLs that are their names backwards (http://rjslrac.com and http://seedrah.com). "A little healthier. Just as tasty" is the tagline for the sites. Each site provides suggestions for eating as healthy as possible at the two chains. This includes the availability of low-carb, lettuce-wrapped burgers and chicken sandwiches.

Automakers and auto dealers better enjoy the good times while they last because new car sales are going to begin sliding after this year, with a serious drop off by 2017, according to a new study. AlixPartners, a global business advisory firm, suggests automakers will sell 12 million vehicles a year in the near future. The industry is tracking for a 16-million to 16.5-million unit sales year right now, but they predict that's all going to come to an end.

Family Dollar Stores' third quarter income plunged 33% amid higher costs and increased competition. Same-store sales fell 1.8%, which marked the third straight quarterly decline. Family Dollar is under pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn to put itself up for sale, and it has has adopted a "poison pill" shareholder rights plan.

Jaguar Land Rover is working on technology that projects telemetry info directly onto windshields. The Virtual Windscreen concept projects hazard, speed and navigation graphics to the driver's view with racing line and braking guidance alongside "ghost" cars and virtual cones for more performance-oriented activities. The company is also working on a gesture control system to supplant button pushing.

As sodas lost footing to waters and teas, they are also losing in the buzz wars. Last year Coke lost its most-talked-about brand status to Apple, reflecting a trend from sodas to technology brands when it comes to word of mouth. The Keller Fay Group finds that word of mouth impressions for sodas like Coke, Pepsi and Dr Pepper have been steadily declining since 2011.

Taco Bell is overhauling its entire Cantina platform and replacing it with bowls and burritos that have at least 20 grams of protein at 500 or fewer calories. The "Cantina Power Menu" includes Bowls with a double portion of chicken or steak, reduced-fat sour cream, real cheddar cheese and an avocado ranch sauce. The Power Burritos will drop the rice and beans and replace them with reduced-fat sour cream and cheddar cheese.

Speaking at his alma mater, Stanford, Ron Johnson, who was jettisoned as CEO of JCPenney 2012, talked about his experience at the company. He said it was the pace of his plan, as opposed to the plan itself, that was wrong, that it was too fast for a company as traditional as Penney. "I resigned three times," he said. "In February I offered to resign, in March I offered to resign, and finally in April, the board chair said 'Ron, we're going to accept your resignation.'"

Dan Fietsam, the former top creative at Energy BBDO, is joining FCB Chicago as executive creator director. Fietsam replaces Jon Flannery, the creator of the viral "Ship My Pants" campaign, who is going north to lead creative at FCB Toronto. Before joining FCB, Flannery headed up campaigns for Gatorade and was a creative director at Leo Burnett.

Target's 2013 data breach hobbled the company last Christmas. Now the company is hoping to buff its image with a new back-to-school campaign that focuses on a commitment to social responsibility. "Buy One Give One" gives school supplies to children and schools in need for every up&up purchase by Target customers between July 15 and Aug. 2.

More than 40% of U.S. households have disconnected from telephone landlines and use only cellular phones, according to a recent study. Preliminary results from the National Health Interview Survey show that the number of cellular-only homes grew 1.6% during the second half of 2013. Among households with both landline and wireless telephones, more than a third use cell phones almost exclusively, according to the report.
