    Kohl's is opening 46 stores today as part of an aggressive effort to take market share from competitors. It also plans to boost spending on holiday-season marketing -- especially online advertising -- and trim inventory to cut costs. But in a sign of the times, Kohl's has scaled back plans announced last year to have 1,400 stores by 2012, according to CEO Kevin Mansell, which would have worked out to just over 100 new stores a year on average.   • Schwarzenegger Signs Bill Requiring Calorie Counts
    California became the first state to require restaurants to put calorie counts on their menus and indoor menu boards Tuesday when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill requiring chains with 20 or more locations to post the information by 2011. Starting in July, restaurants and drive-throughs will have to offer menus that provide information on the calories, saturated fat, carbohydrates and sodium in each item.     It's looks like the holiday season has formally begun as Walmart has already announced that it's cutting prices on some popular toys. The retailer, which will be opening Christmas shops in its stores over the next 10 days, says it's already cutting prices on 10 popular toys, to $10 each. Included are certain Barbie Dolls, Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop and some Hot Wheels toys.
