The automaker confirmed Monday that both the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission are conducting probes. The automaker has been reporting some of the industry's best sales growth in the seven years since it emerged from bankruptcy.

General Motors launched a series of ads suggesting that the Ford F-150 wasn't what it used to be, and that GM trucks were much tougher. Did the ads convince shoppers to make the switch? Not so much. Silverado sales dipped 3.7% in June, while the GMC Sierra fell 7.85%. Ford's F-Series pickups, however, saw a 29% uptick in deliveries.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is asking so-called white-hat hackers to take their best shot at breaking into the automaker's software to find vulnerabilities. If successful, they will get paid. Dubbed the "Bug Bounty Program," the contest could earn a hacker up to $1,500 each time he or she successfully identifies a previously unknown flaw.

California has rejected a proposed recall plan from Volkswagen to fix 16,000 3.0-liter diesel Volkswagens, Audis and Porsches in the state equipped with devices designed to cheat emissions tests. The California Air Resources Board said the plan to fix the luxury vehicles, which range from model years 2009-2016, was insufficient.
