In an image revamp, Radio Shack is dismasting itself of ersatz parts. CEO Joe Magnacca wants RadioShack to win back share from digital mega retailers like Amazon and eBay. The company is doing that by renovating stores into bright and airy environments full of trendy electronics. Phones will be displayed by phone manufacturer instead of sitting on tables at the front of the store organized by wireless carrier.

Four more convenience store retailers -- 7-Eleven Inc., Rutter's Farm Stores, Hy-Vee Inc. and United Supermarkets LLC -- joined the boycott against Rolling Stone Magazine's latest issue, which features a cover image of the alleged Boston Marathon bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The c-store retailers issued separate statements explaining their decision to ban the Aug. 1 issue, which hits newsstands Friday. 7-Eleven won't sell the issue in its 1,700 company-operated outlets around the nation and is also strongly recommending its 5,900 franchised stores choose not to sell the issue.

Hyundai has zombies covered. The Korean automaker is rolling with a Zombie Survival Machine: a tricked-out Veloster. The car debuted at Comic Con in San Diego. It's the second version of the machine. Last year's model was an armor-laden Elantra coupe. The new version is designed to handle the anticipated "zombie hordes" with an array of weaponry, including a baseball bat with spikes mounted to the trunk, knife blades that pop out of the rear bumper, a double-barrel shotgun with mount and a front bumper "horde plow."
Chain Store Age
As part of a previously announced plan to expand into non-traditional channels, RadioShack said its first shop-in-shop college store has opened at the University of Texas at Austin. Located within the University Co-op bookstore, the RadioShack-branded section features consumer electronics products geared toward college kids.

Procter & Gamble's Dawn dishwashing detergent is premiering a seven-part documentary series "The Big Picture" on the Web today. The documentary series highlights rescue work by Dawn's nonprofit wildlife partners, International Bird Rescue and The Marine Mammal Center. The series is narrated by "Parks and Recreation" star Rob Lowe.

Playtex Bras combined $10 million of TV, social, and digital to create a campaign that encourages women of all ages to "be uniquely you." For the past six to eight months Playtex has been conducting a series of qualitative and quantitative research, including focus groups and surveys, to better identify women's underlying underwire frustrations and areas where the brand could improve.

Petco is launching a product from Kusin & Kusin Ltd.: Reviver Pets Freshening Swipes, the first-ever reusable, dry-application freshening swipe for use on pets and people. Reviver Pets use a dry odor-neutralizing chemistry that releases odor-eliminating ingredients that Kusin & Kusin says is safe for pets between often costly grooming appointments.

Goodyear's current fleet of three blimps -- based out of Akron, Pompano Beach, Fla., and Carson, Calif. -- is aging, and the company announced in 2011 that it had decided to replace the airships with faster, longer, quieter, more maneuverable zeppelins. But the company will still call them blimps. The airships were developed by Friedrichshafen, Germany's Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik.

Diageo is looking to woo younger drinkers to its Johnnie Walker brand with the launch of a pan-European marketing strategy for its luxury variants. The scotch whisky brand is to roll out online, experiential and on-trade activity over the next 12 months to promote its luxury, super premium variants such as Double Black and Odyssey. It is also planning to introduce elements of its marketing from Asia and the Middle East such as experiential hub "House of Johnnie Walker" as part of the push.

Tedeschi and Cumberland are banning the Rolling Stone issue on whose cover is one of the two Boston Marathon bombers. On its Facebook page, the Rockland Mass.-based c-store operator wrote, "Tedeschi Food Shops supports the need to share the news with everyone, but cannot support actions that serve to glorify the evil actions of anyone. With that being said, we will not be carrying this issue of Rolling Stone. Music and terrorism don't mix!" Walgreens is also nixing it.
