Starbucks is pulling the plug on its upscale baker chain La Boulange. Stating that the bakery cafes "are not sustainable for the company's long-term growth," Starbucks announced it would close all 23 La Boulange stores in the Bay Area by the end of September. Starbucks paid $100 million to acquire La Boulange three years ago, and began offering La Boulange baked goods at Starbucks locations.

Ikea is getting into the social anthropology business. The company plans to make 1,000 house calls a year at customers' homes, an effort to get back on track with consumer desires. Ikea will look at products they own, how kids play, and what problems people encounter when running their households. The point is to determine what different customers want in different markets and tailor the stores appropriately.

Apple announced additions to its iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch features during its Worldwide Developer Conference. One is an addition to its HealthKit: reproductive health. The HealthKit lets you track health stats and vitamin intake among other things. Documentation on the new female reproductive health feature suggests users will be able to track the level of flow with each cycle as well as cervical mucus quality, a factor for women who are trying to become pregnant.

McDonald's back with Shakin' Flavor Fries. This time, however, the idea is to appeal to Millennials who, apparently, like to make things themselves. It's a "Create Your Taste" platform. Starting in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan, and promoted with a "Which Shakin' Flavor Are You?" Twitter-based giveaway contest, you get a packet of seasonings at no extra charge with fries purchase. It also has its own webpage on the McDonald's U.S.A. site.

Kmart has appointed former DSW Chief Marketing Officer Kelly N. Cook as its CMO. There was never a formal announcement, but Cook's LinkedIn profile indicates that she joined Kmart in that position in April. Cook is the first person to hold the CMO position on a permanent basis at Kmart since former CMO Andrew Stein left the company to take the same role at Big Lots Inc. in November 2013. Mark Andeer held the role on an interim basis between Stein and Cook.

Beauty products company Coty Inc., which owns such products like the fragrance lines of Calvin Klein and Mark Jacobs, has won an auction to acquire two related businesses from Procter & Gamble. The company has also won P&G's hair-care lines, which includes its Wella brand. The value of the three deals could reach $12 billion, per sources

Besides having too much of everything, "Jurassic World" is also festooned with too much product placement, as if there is ever too little. The movie itself has appeared in far too many places in recent months as a sponsorship-happy consumer brand. Never mind that. In Philadelphia, Night Market Philadelphia attracts 25,000 people to city neighborhoods after dark. Besides vendors offering Philadelphia food, there are also events, dancing, art and commerce of various kinds. New York now has one, though the biggest market is California.

Walgreens' three-year-old Balance Rewards for healthy choices (BRhc) program, which has over 800,000 users as of April, gives Balance Rewards points for logging blood pressure or weight loss, tracking daily activity and setting achievable goals. According to a white paper, all users who logged their weight lost an average of 3.3 pounds over six months, with 27% losing more than six pounds and 16.5% over 10 pounds. The BRhc program also seems to help medication adherence.

Infiniti only had a slight increase in U.S. sales last month, but Randy Parker, who was named Infiniti Americas VP, is taking it in stride; the brand has been struggling for years, and any good signs are really good signs. "Getting where we want to be is going to happen one step at a time." The good news in the little increase was a 17% lift in sales of the Q50 sedan, a 2-year-old model. Infiniti brand sales rose 1% overall last month.
