Chanel is launching a line of environmentally conscious skincare and cosmetic products, including its first refillable beauty product. Called No. 1 de Chanel, it is housed in packaging with no outer plastic wrapping and no inner paper leaflets. Chanel’s chief sustainability officer Kate Wylie says that the line is the culmination of more than a decade of research into natural ingredients, alternative packaging materials and refill formats.

Employees at a recently unionized Starbucks location in Buffalo, New York, walked out on Jan. 5 to protest unsafe working conditions due to understaffing. "The workers feel pressured by Starbucks corporate to go to work, despite health risks, and are struggling to enforce mask mandates," per Nation's Restaurant News. "The workers are asking Starbucks to close the store and only have workers return to work when it’s fully staffed and they feel they are better able to handle health and safety concerns."

Lexus is doing away with its old vehicle badging, replacing it with Lexus lettering spelled out across the tailgate or trunk across all models. “As Lexus enters a new chapter under its electrification strategy, the brand is making a couple of important changes,” Brain Bolain, Lexus' global head of marketing, said in an interview with MotorTrend during the Design Miami fair. "We need some way to signify that change is coming to Lexus, and this may seem like a dumb way, but it catches your eye.”

Samsung’s engineers are developing a washing machine that can filter out microplastic waste and keep them from entering the environment without compromising performance.

Nike is accusing Lululemon of patent infringement over the apparel maker’s at-home Mirror fitness device and related mobile applications. “Nike has launched a range of popular mobile apps such as Nike Run Club and Nike Training Club,” per CNBC. “Lululemon bought Mirror for $500 million in 2020 amid a rush among consumers to workout at home during the Covid pandemic.”

The Recording Academy and CBS said they are postponing the Grammy Awards, scheduled for Jan. 31 in Los Angeles, due to a rise in COVID-19 cases. The NFL, as it does every year, has looked at other potential sites for Super Bowl LVI, which is scheduled to be played Feb. 13, also in Los Angles. “We have contacted several clubs to inquire about stadium availability in the event we cannot play the Super Bowl as scheduled due to weather-related issues or unforeseen circumstances," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said via the league.

The NFL’s Washington Football Team said it plans to unveil its new team name and logo on Feb. 2. Team colors will continue to be burgundy & gold. The former Redskins — a moniker used from 1937-2019 — has been known as the Washington Football Team since July 2020. “Our journey to a new identity is a marathon not a sprint,” the team said in a teaser posted to social media. “To get it right, we had to take every step of the process seriously, And the destination is the sum of all those parts.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is calling on the state legislature to allow restaurants to serve to-go cocktails permanently. It would codify the temporary proposal that first took effect at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. That temporary reprieve expired in June when then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo formally lifted a state of emergency related to the pandemic. The New York Liquor Authority advised businesses they would no longer be able to sell alcohol for off-site consumption, per The Hill.

One restaurant no longer needs to find “warm bodies” to fill waitstaff positions. Rosie, the newest server at The Smoke Shop BBQ in Boston’s Kendall Square neighborhood, is a robot. “The Smoke Shop has been using Rosie for the past few weeks to run food from the kitchen to the bar area, and to bring take-out orders from the packing operation in back to delivery drivers up front,” per The Boston Globe. “Adding some automation to the restaurant’s lineup means a team member doesn’t have to run back and forth from the kitchen.”

Toyota topped General Motors last year in U.S. auto sales, the first year in recorded history that a foreign automaker has outsold American manufacturers.“The dominance of the U.S. automakers of the U.S. market is just over,” Erik Gordon, a business professor at the University of Michigan, told The New York Times. “Toyota might not beat GM again this year, but the fact that they did it is symbolic of how the industry changed. No U.S. automaker can think of themselves as entitled to market share just because they’re American.”
