• Cancer Centers Called Out For Advertorial
    The Association of American Cancer Institutes had a 56-page advertorial section in US Airways Magazine's October issue showcasing its work and the contributions of many of its member academic cancer centers have made. But it was apparently not labeled as an advertorial, despite the estimated $200,000 cost. A representative of Pace Communications, publisher of US Airways' in-flight magazine said readers would be smart enough to know the difference. Read on.
  • Google To Make Kid Versions Of Top Search, Watch Channels
    Beginning next year Google will create versions of products like YouTube, search, and Chrome for those 12 and younger. "The big motivator inside the company is everyone is having kids, so there's a push to change our products to be fun and safe for children," said Pavni Diwanji, the VP of engineering. "We expect this to be controversial, but the simple truth is kids already have the technology in schools and at home, so the better approach is to simply see to it that the tech is used in a better way."
  • Norelco Taps Baseball Star Mike Piazza To Pitch Series 9000
    Electric shaving brand Philips Norelco has signed baseball star Mike Piazza to appear in videos in which he tests the Philips Norelco Shaver Series 9000. In the new Philips Norelco #RidgeRunner video, Piazza does a series of physical challenges meant to evince the parallels between mastering the contours of the rugged terrain and the shaver tackling his own face.   • Uber To Test Carpooling In New York
    Uber customers with iOS devices will be able to share rides with other UberX riders in New York City starting this week, with Android users joining UberPOOL on Dec. 8, per the company's blog. "On any given day, the vast majority of UberX trips in NYC have a 'lookalike' trip - a trip that starts near, ends near, and is happening around the same time as another trip," the post explains. "Most of these trips transport 1-2 people, leaving 2-3 empty seats." Uber has tested UberPool in Paris and San Francisco.
  • Forrester Says Data Sharing Faces Hurdles
    Research firm Forrester says that while there has been a big increase in the number of technology executives who think partners' data is important (from 30% two years ago to 47% now), data management platforms admit to implementing just 10 to 20 data sharing projects per year. Reasons include marketers' reluctance to reveal and share the types of data they collect, and privacy concerns.
  • He's No Steve Jobs, But Under Tim Cook, Apple Thrives
    Since Tim Cook became CEO of Apple, the company's market cap has increased by over $300 billion, reaching a record $698 billion last week. That's just one of the success at Apple under Cook, who took over as CEO in 2011. There's also the iPhone 6 launch this year, with over 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phones sold in their first three days on the market. The company has also made inroads into China, and successfully launched Apple Pay, and iOS 8.
  • November Auto Sales Hit Ten-Year Record
    The combination of lower gasoline prices, rising consumer confidence, and a strong end-of-the-month push from Black Friday helped raise November new vehicle sales to their highest level in more than a decade. Chrysler, General Motors, Volkswagen, Toyota and Audi all posted sales gains while Nissan and Ford reported small declines. Chrysler Group LLC, paced by Jeep and Ram truck, reported a 20% increase versus last year, making last month the best November since 2001 for the company.
  • Girl Scout Cookie Sales Go Digital
    Sure to stretch the country’s collective waistline, the sale of Girl Scout cookies is going digital. Yes, “Girl Scouts are adding digital marketing to their formidable arsenal of charm, cuteness and perseverance to sell millions of boxes of Thin Mints, Samoas and other longtime cookie favorites,” The New York Times reports. “After years of prohibiting Internet sales, the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., the group’s national organization, has approved ‘Digital Cookie,’ a platform for scouts to sell and ship the colorfully boxed cookies.”
  • EBay Taps Naked For Europe
    EBay has tapped Naked Communications, led by its London office, to handle its social media and content in Europe. It will include eBay's key markets of Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the UK. Naked won the account following a pitch run by eBay with the support of Creativebrief. The pitch kicked off in July. EBay hired MediaCom to its GBP80 million pan-European media account in May 2014.
  • Nissan Launches Truck Teaser
    With the official unveiling of the next-generation Nissan Titan pickup just six weeks away, the Japanese maker is launching a teaser blitz to drum up interest. Nissan originally had big hopes of carving out its own niche, but after 11 years with no major makeover of the outgoing Titan, the maker clearly needs to start all over with a fresh design, improved powertrain options and a raft of new features.
