As VW of America chief Michael Horn explained he didn't know how the diesel cheating could happen to a dais of angry U.S. congressmen, the California Air Resources Board informed VW it better have a plan in place to fix the problem by Nov. 20. The deadline comes 45 days after the automaker received a compliance letter on Sept. 18 regarding the diesel issue. Not only that, it appears that California officials are going to start testing other diesels from automakers other than VW to ensure they are compliant.

Whole Foods Market Inc. has made a minority investment in Mendocino Farms, the first restaurant partnership for the natural and organic grocery chain in recent history, Mendocino Farms officials told Nation's Restaurant News. The partnership will help the 11-unit, better-sandwich chain build infrastructure as it expands into the San Diego and San Francisco Bay Area markets in late 2016.

Facebook confirmed is is now testing a slate of emojis to replace "dislike." Mark Zuckerberg, in a video at the jump, says the idea is just about giving more options to express yourself. The test is currently limited to users in Ireland and Spain. If the results are positive to the new reaction buttons, the replacement could roll out to the rest of the billion or so Facebook users.

Volkswagen of America shouldn't look forward to selling 2.0 Litre TDI diesel engine-powered 2016 in the near future. The EPA plans to subject the vehicles to a battery of tests to ensure they comply with U.S. emissions laws before sales can begin. Chris Grundler, director of the EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality said the agency's process to certify VW's 2016 model year lineup powered by the 2.0-liter engines will take "a matter of months" to complete.

Sponsorship spending on the NBA and its 30 teams hit a record $739 million last season, up from $679 million (8.9%) the previous year, according to the just released IEG Sponsorship Report from research and consulting firm IEG, Chicago. The figure is also up from $572 million in 2011, $610 million in 2012 and $642 million in 2013. Anheuser-Busch was the league's most active sponsor last season, followed by State Farm , Gatorade, adidas, Coca-Cola, MillerCoors, Kia Motors, Spalding, Pepsi and Geico.

Amazon's voice service Alexa is giving suggestions to Amazon Echo users about how to use Campbell Soup in recipes based on preferences, weather and what's trending. Amazon Echo is a tubular desktop device that can read the weather, check sports scores, play music and handle other functions. The program was put together by Rain, Campbell's digital agency.

Basketball All-Star LeBron James has signed on as spokesperson for fast-casual pizza brand Blaze Fast Fire'd Pizza. The Pasadena, Calif.-based Blaze has signed a multi-year endorsement deal with James, one of Blaze Pizza's founding investors three years ago. Others are former California First Lady Maria Shriver, Boston Red Sox chairman Tom Werner and movie producer John Davis. James is also a franchisee of the brand in Chicago and Miami. He will become more directly involved in marketing activities, including advertising, social media and in-store appearances.

Redheaded "Mad Men" actress Christina Hendricks has been doing ads for Procter & Gamble's Nice 'n Easy hair dye since the show ended. But the commercial has been ruled misleading by U.K. watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority. The regulator received complaints from professional hair colorists who said there was no way Hendricks' bright red hair could have been converted to the "natural honey blonde" shown in the ad using only the Nice 'n Easy product being advertised.

Chevrolet has launched a digital comedy series on Yahoo to pitch the 2016 Traverse as a family vehicle. Story lines in the nine-episode series hones in on such vehicle features as available 4G LTE WiFi. In the first episode of the series, "Going There with Ana Gasteyer," starring the former "Saturday Night Live" cast member, Gasteyer orders groceries online for comic Jenna Fischer with a tablet while the two sit outside at a park.
