• Elon Musk Tweets Plans To Buy Manchester United
    Elon Musk has been known to stir things up on Twitter -- and he did just that Tuesday night, tweeting that he intended to buy the Manchester United soccer team. But it was just a joke. “Musk tweeted that he would buy the club around 8 p.m. ET,” per Sports Illustrated. “Over four hours later he confirmed that he was kidding, calling it a ‘long-running joke on Twitter.’” Musk’s tweet could attract regulatory attention because Manchester United is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

    Walgreens has created a new role focused on design. Min Cho is joining the company as chief format concepts and design officer at the end of August.  "In this newly created role and function, Min will focus on new innovative store design and architecture which embraces creativity and functionality to put our customers, patients and team members at the center of everything we do," Walgreens said.
  • Pfizer CEO Tests Positive For COVID-19
    Pfizer CEO Albert Bourlam tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms, he announced Monday. Bourla said he was isolating in place and following all public health precautions. "I am thankful to have received four doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and I am feeling well while experiencing very mild symptoms," he posted on Twitter. "(I) have started a course of Paxlovid."
  • Amazon Expands Palm Scanning Payment Option
    Amazon is testing out its contactless “One” palm scanner payment technology at 65 Whole Foods stores in California. “The tech works like this: Users visit a kiosk or a point-of-sale station at participating locations to link their palm and payment card to the service,” per Tech Crunch. “Then, all they have to do during the checkout process is hover their hand over a scanner to complete the transaction.”

  • Lyft Creates Division To Sell Expanded Ad Offerings
    Lyft Media aims to consolidate and expand the ad products at the ride-hailing company. Beyond its rooftop ads already on tap,  "Lyft will now allow brands to serve content on in-car tablets that riders can use to track their routes, tip and rate drivers, and control the music in each car," per The Wall Street Journal. "Lyft has also been offering in-app sponsorships that include banner ads and branded icons.   • Travel Biz Looks To Older Labor Pool
    "The travel industry, "facing significant labor shortages," has begun to hire older and retired people for part-time work -- folks who are "shameless about the fact that they’re in it for the perks," according to TheNew York Times. "With their new part-time jobs, some older workers have found a chance to break in a passport for the very first time." Their employers have found perks in the arrangement as well: "In this labor climate, it’s awesome just to have somebody who is professional and reliable,” noted one hotel manager.
  • Zales Parent Company Buys Online Jeweler Blue Nile
    In a bid to appeal to younger customers and increase its bridal business, Signet Jewelers bought online jewelry retailer Blue Nile for $360 million in an all-cash deal. Separately, the parent company of Zales, Jared and Kay Jewelers cut its financial forecast for the second quarter and full-year fiscal 2023, saying it started to see softer sales in July as consumers reined in their spending amid inflation.
  • Casper Seeks 'Professional Sleepers'
    Mattress company Casper has posted online looking for professional sleepers. “Join the Casper Sleepers and show off your sleeping skills in public, on social, and anywhere else people are looking,” the posting reads. “So join us to literally sleep on the job.” What exactly is the job? "You’ll sleep in the company’s stores and other 'unexpected settings out in the world'—on camera, no less," according to Fortune.  Those located in the NYC area are preferred, and sleep professionals will receive free Casper products along with compensation.  
  • Target Drops Second Tabitha Brown Collection
    Target is offering a second collection from TikTok star Tabitha Brown. “The actress, vegan chef and influencer teamed up with the retailer on a dynamic collection featuring home décor, furniture, stationary and pet accessories in an array of bright feel-good colors and patterns,” per USA Today. The retailer is planning two more releases of items, including clothing.
