• This Is Real Guerrilla Marketing
The Occupy Wall Street protests have moved into their third week. Time to advertise, especially since the protests are gaining support from unions and other groups, and global coverage. Occupy Wall Street has thus gotten into some good sloganeering down at New York's Zuccotti Park, and they have a newspaper, The Occupy Wall Street Journal. Jim Edwards offers 13 of the most witty signs snapped by Flickr users David Shankbone and kapkap, CC.
  • Forget TiVo When The Shows ARE The Ads
"My Yard Goes Disney." The ultimate long-form ad, it's Disney's version of owned media, where there is not the slightest effort to fence it in Disney's own back yard. The show makes "Top Chef" plugging frozen meals and Gladware, cars by action stars and the Coke vs. Pepsi wars between "American Idol" and "The X Factor" so last week. In the show, Disney theme park designers visit backyards to make them over. Branding one's "normal" existence is an outgrowth of advertisers' increasing desperation to get you to see what they're trying to show you.
  • FTC: Four Loko Must Change Packaging
The Federal Trade Commission charged the maker of an alcoholic, carbonated malt beverage with deceptive advertising, and now the company has agreed to make changes to its product's packaging. Phusion Projects has agreed to only use resealable containers for its Four Loko flavored malt beverages that have more alcohol than the equivalent of two-and-a-half regular 12-ounce beers. Additionally, the settlement also bars Phusion Projects from misrepresenting the alcohol content of any beverage, and from depicting people drinking directly from the container of any product containing more alcohol than that found in two-and-a-half regular beers.
  • Tesla To Go Up Against BMW M5
Tesla is determined to put to rest the old canard that green cars can't be fun to drive. If that message didn't get through with the maker's high-power, low-volume Roadster, the California start-up hopes you won't miss out on the fact that its upcoming Model S won't just be fast but will be able to rival the new BMW M5 when it comes to launching off the stoplight.
  • Fortune Brands' Home Unit To Invest In Products, Ads
Fortune Brands Home & Security Inc. is ready to invest in new products, new advertising and possibly even acquisitions, its chief executive said Monday, just hours before its spin-off from Fortune Brands Inc. CEO Chris Klein told Reuters that when the maker of Moen faucets, Simonton windows and Master Lock locks becomes a pure-play company, it will no longer have to compete for resources and will be able to invest in more projects.
  • Call For Food Marketers To Label Genetically Altered Food
Today, a coalition of 300 companies, organizations and doctors will announce that it has filed a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to require that all genetically engineered foods include a label that advises consumers they're eating food that has been altered. Foodmakers in the U.S. currently don't have to say whether they are selling food whose molecules have been changed.
  • Target Loses CMO To JC Penney
Longtime Target Corp. veteran and chief marketing officer Michael R. Francis on Monday resigned from the discounter and was named president of J.C. Penney Co., effective Oct. 4. In his new position, Francis, 48, will be responsible for all merchandising, marketing, planning and allocation, and product development and sourcing functions. Although Johnson is best known as the head of Apple stores, he previously served 15 years at Target, where he held various positions including VP merchandising.

  • Hit Movie, Lousy Marketing?
"Moneyball" has gotten great reviews, a big opening weekend, star power, Oscar talk, you name it. The problem is the marketing, and the film's positioning as "the feel good movie of the year." Writes blogger Ben Koo, "'Moneyball' is certainly a lot of different things, all of which are good. A great sports movie, well acted, well written, smart, and compelling, but I don't think anyone is going to bestow that it's the feel good movie of the year." He offers a list of other observers who are equally confused by the positioning of the film. "Every movie, …
