• Martin Agency Wins Tic Tac
    Richmond, Va.-based The Martin Agency has won the advertising account for the worldwide candy and leading breath mint brand Tic Tac. Measured media was reportedly $13.6 million in 2013. The Martin Agency replaces New York-based Merkley & Partners, which had handled the account since 2004.
  • YouTube Launches Off-Line Playback For Android In 3 Asian Countries
    YouTube has been talking about it since last year and now has launched a feature that lets you watch videos offline. But it's for Android only. Oh, and you have to be in India, Indonesia or the Philippines. The company said it chose the countries (instead of the U.S.) because "Asia has proven itself to be a mobile-first world in terms of smartphone adoption, but access to high-speed, affordable data remains a big challenge."
  • Elena Ford Cuts Ribbon On First Stand-Alone Lincoln Showroom In Oman
    Elena Ford, Ford Motor's VP for global dealer and customer experience, inaugurated the first Lincoln-only dealer in Oman. The automaker is focusing on making Lincoln a global luxury brand. At the event with H.E. Said bin Saleh bin Said Al Kyumi, chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and attended by senior Ford Middle East & Africa leadership team members also saw the launch of the all-new Lincoln MKC premium compact SUV in the Sultanate.
  • Carl's Intros 'Natural' Burger
    Carl's Jr., not exactly known for diet-consciousness, or advertising reticence for that matter, will become the first major fast-food chain to sell a "natural" burger. The "All-Natural Burger" rolls out Dec. 17 at all 1,150 stores. It has no antibiotics, no steroids, no added hormones and comes from grass-fed, free-range cattle. Chipotle and Panera Bread have succeeded with this tactic, attracting young consumers with healthy menus. The burger giants are doing likewise.

    Ex-P&G brand Sunny Delight is rolling out Fruit2O, a new brand of flavored sparkling waters. It is also trying an energy drink. The brand's successes demonstrate how its equity has strength and is keeping it afloat as an orphan. "It's liberating - I know everyone in the company," says Billy Cyr, Sunny D's chief executive. "The biggest change is you can make fast decisions. We're more nimble."
  • Toyota Teases New Tacoma Mid-Size Truck
    Toyota teased its 2016 Tacoma truck ahead of its official unveiling in Detroit next month. The teaser photo is of the left rear end of the truck as it does the requisite tramp through the mud. The design is more aggressive with more lines and a bolder nameplate. Until now the Tacoma has had little competition, but things are heating up with the new mid-size trucks from Chevrolet and GMC, the Colorado and Canyon, respectively. Tacoma is 70% of all U.S. small-truck sales in 2013.
  • Soccer Players Unpaid As Sponsors Split Town
    Five of the Brazilian league's 20 clubs ended the season this month without major sponsors. Some of the sponsors canceled after throwing their spend on the World Cup. Some are reducing advertising budgets because of weak economic growth in Brazil, per Luiz Gonzaga Belluzzo, former president of the Palmeiras soccer club. Toshiba Corp. and Banco BMG SA have cut spend and Kia is leaving because it says returns fell short of expectations.
  • Uber Facing Challenges In Far East, Too
    Online car service operator Uber has been facing pushback from governments in the U.S. and abroad. Thailand's Department of Land Transport is the latest government organization to nudge Uber off the road. The bureau has ruled that the car-sharing service is operating illegally. Thus Uber Black and Uber X services are now banned there. Singapore is looking at restrictions on car-sharing and Malaysia wants to nab Uber drivers without licenses. Uber had to shutter operations in Nevada after a court backed the state's view that the company was operating illegally with unlicensed drivers.
  • Delta Revamps Main Cabin
    Delta Air Lines has revamped its economy and enhanced economy, with changes to kick in around March. "We want easily recognizable branded products that reflect thoughtful and reliable amenities for each of our customer types," Delta spokesman Paul Skrbec said. There will be a budget option, "Basic Economy" fares on selected Delta flights. But that choice will come with restrictions. Premium economy will be rebranded "Delta Comfort+," and those passengers will get free premium snacks and booze, among other things.
  • Why Cadillac Needs More Than Ad Campaign
    Cadillac used to be the walking dead in the luxury-car business but now cars like ATS and CTS are as good or better than what the Germans are selling. But European-brand buyers aren't coming to Caddy. The brand's marketing chief, formerly of Infiniti, Uwe Ellinghaus says the company, which is moving to New York, will launch a new ad campaign next April timed with the unveiling of the new CT6 sedan at the New York auto show. Ellinghaus said it would be a new and different advertising approach.
