• Fiat Running GIFs On TV
    Fiat is putting social videos on TV. A new campaign uses GIFs of crazy, made-for-buzz-type, short videos such as a guy in a rabbit suit twerking against a Fiat cutting to a driver wearing a horse mask with the caption "Deal With It." Chief marketer Olivier Francois said even though the GIFs were for Tumblr he liked them enough to use them in a business presentation. From there to TV.
  • Auto Recalls Just Background Noise
    It's not just GM. There have been so many recalls this year by various automakers that it's just so much background noise. Besides GM's big recall - or maybe because of it - others have announced some 47 recalls so far this year, covering 8.54 million U.S. vehicles, according to government records. Studies show the recalls have no effect on the value of the recalled cars or sales.
  • Valero Transforms Movie Sweeps
    Valero and Valero-branded locations are partnering with Paramount Pictures to give away a new 2014 Camaro as part of a sweepstakes around "Transformers: Age of Extinction." The "Rumble with Bumblebee" sweepstakes dangles a grand prize of a 2014 Camaro and a private hometown screening of the fourth film in director Michael Bay's global franchise, which hits theaters June 27.
  • P.F. Chang's Confirms Credit Card Data Breach
    P.F. Chang's China Bistro confirmed Friday morning that there had been a breach involving data from customers' credit and debit cards used at its restaurants. After learning of the breach Tuesday, the company said it was launching, with the United States Secret Service and a team of third-party forensics experts, a study to understand the nature and scope of the incident.   • The Milk Man Is Back
    Fresh milk, organic vegetables and free-range chicken are being delivered as they used to be: to the front door. Fifty years ago, 30% of milk was delivered via milkman. By 2005, the last year for which USDA has numbers, that number had dropped to 0.4% Now, bottled milk is again being dropped to peoples' front doors. Fear of processed foods, E. coli and factory farms, and worries about the source of food, and how much of it is of the Frankenfood variety, are all driving the trend.
  • VW's Distracted Driving Video A Hit
    A VW ad about the dangers of texting and driving, made in China and directed at Chinese consumers, has gone way beyond that country. The spot shows a movie audience watching a pre-roll of a car cruising down the road seen from the driver's perspective. Suddenly - thanks to computer magic - everyone in the theatre gets a text. When audience members dutifully check their phones, the car suddenly crashes.
  • Apple Likes Beats Campaign
    Apple is praising a youth-oriented ad campaign by Beats. Apple has announced plans to buy the company, founded by Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. Though rumors had been that Apple hasn't liked Beats advertising, the companies executives are now saying how much they love the new creative. The new World Cup ads feature, among others, Brazil's Neymar Jr. and France's Bacary Sagna.
  • Ford Restating Mileage On Six Models
    Ford is going to be putting out some more cash due to mileage rating issues on six of its new models. It's the second time in less than a year it has had to restate the mileage on a vehicle. The company cut the rating on its 2013-14 Lincoln MKZ hybrid by 7 mpg. Also affected are the 2014 Ford Fiesta, the hybrid and Energi versions of the 2013-14 Ford Fusion, the C-Max Hybrid and Energi. The maker will reimburse more than 200,000 owners between $125 and $1,050.
  • Snacks Are Half Of What We Eat
    According to Laurie Demeritt, CEO of the Hartman Group, 50% of all eating occasions are snacks, with the traditional three squares a day comprising the other half. "Foods that were traditionally thought of as snacks are now being eaten as meals; things that were eaten as meals are now being eaten as snacks," she said, adding that the pre-breakfast snack, the dinner snack and the late-night snack are on the rise.
  • Starbucks Testing Wireless Charging
    It is always an issue finding a place to plug in a computer or cell phone at Starbucks. No more. The company is installing Duracell Powermat wireless charging stations in all of its stores, starting with Bay Area outlets. The company, with 200 Bay Area stores, will put the devices on tables and counters, then roll them out nationwide.
