Thanks to Labor Day promotions, piles of cash on the hood at Northeast dealerships, and low gas prices, U.S. light-vehicle sales rose 16% in September. The domestic three, Toyota Motor Corp., Nissan Group and Honda Motor Co. all reported double-digit gains. The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate surged to 18.17 million, easily topping the 17.7 million forecast.

A nationwide survey commissioned by the Marketing Executives Networking Group reveals that more than half of millennials age 18-34 indicated they trusted Amazon more than any other major tech company. Also 17% of the millennials named Google as their most trusted tech brand, followed by Apple (12%). Roughly 8% selected Facebook, and about 5% indicated that Microsoft was the most trustworthy of the major tech brands. The survey also showed that millennials are more likely to be brand loyal than older consumers.

Doritos has just done a 12-hour Periscope campaign in Canada to promote its new Collisions product. Every hour on the hour, Doritos and BBDO Toronto launched various objects at each other from cannons, such as marbles and porcelain plates, a pie and a baseball, a laptop and a watermelon, to name a few. The new product features two flavors of Doritos in one bag - guacamole and habanero in the first variety to debut.

Carole Little, a Los Angeles fashion designer whose sportswear found an eager audience among working women looking for affordable style, died on Sept. 19 at her home in San Diego. She was 80. In 1974, Ms. Little and her future husband, Leonard Rabinowitz, started California Fashion Industries with $20,000. The company lost $250,000 in its first year. A trip to France turned out to be an eye-opener.

Whole Foods Market has announced that, by April, it will stop sourcing foods that are produced using prison labor. The company acted after facing demonstrations in Houston where it was put on notice for employing inmates through prison-work programs. Michael Allen, founder of End Mass Incarceration Houston, which organized the protest, said Whole Foods was being exploitive.

It was a photo about Tuesday Advertising Week events that showed a panel of white people in front of a backdrop that says "Here are All the Black People." So it looked like white people discussing the lack of black people in advertising. Wrong. What we're dealing with here is a failure to communicate. More at the jump.

Coca-Cola, Unilever, L'Oreal and Johnson & Johnson are a few top brands that have all put their ginormous media billings up for review. Martin Sorrell says this behavior puts big pressure on his holding company WPP, the incumbent on several accounts. "[Are the reviews] because of transparency, a rebate issue in a non-rebate market, because of a lack of trust, media fragmentation, or because media is the biggest line item in PNLs?" This, he said, has led to selecting agencies based on price and treating them as either the "bank or insurer."

McDonald's is changing the name of its customized burger program as the company continues expansion of the test. The Oak Brook, Ill.-based chain is shifting the name "TasteCrafted" to "Chef Crafted" in certain regions where the build-your-own burger program is available. The Chef Crafted test is in about 200 restaurants, with more to come later this year. Menu flavors are also being tweaked: the hot jalapeno and deluxe toppings will be replaced by maple-bacon Dijon and buffalo bacon.
