  • How To Lower Cost Per Lead Through Inbound Marketing
Sherice Jacob calls inbound marketing "a new spin" on the processing of capturing leads through traditional techniques. Jacob takes us through the three-prong inbound strategy that includes blogging, social media and content marketing. The practice supports reaching more customers who are likely to convert -- and reaching them for less cost and effort compared with traditional methods. Many marketers are likely to use lead generation without really knowing it. It's a delicate balancing act because site content should not overwhelm or overload the site visitor, Jacob writes.
  • Seven Marketing Sins
Kristi Hines describes seven big marketing sins, from not responding to the company's audience on social media, to ignoring local search marketing. It's important to monitor social networks for mentions, but more important to strike up a conversation. And while Hines tells us about the sin of not creating a consistent online presence, don't forget to take that concept and make it consistent with campaigns in the physical world.
  • The Internet Wastes Your Time
Pew Internet & American Life Project released a study that apparently suggests the Internet is a place people can go to waste time. The study finds that 53% of adults say they use the Web for no reason but to pass the time. Of those who use the Internet, 74% said they go online just to pass the time. This trend, the study suggests, makes the Internet a competitor to all kinds of leisure activities, such as shopping, watching television and listening to the radio.
  • Google Could Become Drop-Shipment Middleman
Taken straight from a distribution strategy manufacturers call "drop shipments," Google is reportedly building a delivery service that would allow consumers to order online and have the physical content delivered within a day or two. The discount program would resemble services, in scope, offered by Amazon Prime by combining Google Products with a quick shipping service. Gap, OfficeMax and Macy's have been approached, but would not confirm they are on board, according to sources.

  • How To Use Call Extensions And Bid-To-Call
Eric Wortman tells us that the Google Adwords bid-per-call feature now offers max bids for clicks and calls. So he takes us through setting up call extensions and monitoring metrics and effectiveness. For example, he tells marketers to find the data on each call by simply pulling down the View menu in the Dimensions tab and selecting "call details." The data in the report, which marketers can download and upload into another program or spreadsheet, provides the duration of the call and area code.
  • Google Grants Are A Wonderful Thing
Giving back can be rewarding, but search engine marketing professionals know an ongooing campaign needs continual monitoring and care. Lynn Bruno tells search professionals how to give back to non-profits without breaking the bank. Bruno explains how she helped Wren's Nest -- a literary museum in Atlanta, Ga. devoted to preserving the legacy of author Joel Chandler Harris -- double click-through rates using best practices and increasing the number of Google bucks spent.
  • The Evolution Of Google Search
Google has produced a video explaining the evolution of Google search, starting with its roots in PageRank at Stanford University, moving through adding paid-search ads, and indexing and aggregating news and information more frequently than once monthly. Even as recently as Sept. 11, 2001, the news was crawled about every few weeks, according to the video. Nirvana would be to build a search engine that would enable anyone to ask a question and get an educated answer -- such as when is the best time to sow seeds in India, given that the monsoon came early this year.
