    Google plans to finance and build a wireless network throughout parts of Africa and southeast Asia to provide Internet access through white spaces -- unused TV broadcast spectrum channels. The service will broadcast from three base stations at Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Tygerberg, Cape Town. Trials will begin at 10 schools in Cape Town to test the technology.

    The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a patent on push-to-talk technology. It describes a method to provide push-to-talk from one user to another in a wireless packet data telecommunications network. Apple Insider tells us that's one in 26 that the patent officer granted Apple this week. Another was a double-sided touch-sensitive panel that could possibly appear in future iPhones or glass.   • DoubleClick Could Become Center Of Antitrust Probe
    DoubleClick and other firms that specialize in helping Web publishers sell ads from their Web sites could become the focus of an antitrust probe for U.S. regulators, according to Reuters, citing sources. As of this post, Google had not been notified of the antitrust investigation. Some report Google’s DoubleClick purchase as controversial and subject of a lengthy review by the FTC.  
  • Google, Facebook Reportedly In Talks To Buy Waze
    Google and Facebook are reportedly in talks to acquire Waze, a mapping startup that gets information through crowdsourcing. Neither suitor is close to sealing the deal, according to Bloomberg. Interestingly, Waze investors include Redmond, Wash-based Microsoft, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing's Horizons Ventures Hong Kong.
  • Google Acquires Makani Power
    Google has acquired Makani Power, a startup described as building power-generating cable-tethered flying wind turbines, to integrate in Google X's "moonshot" division that focuses on the most science fiction-type technologies. Google helped to fund the company in its early days. The company's multibillion-dollar research and development budget allows the company to experiment.

  • Foursquare Releases Conversational Search Feature
    Foursquare has released what it calls "super-specific searches to help users find what they seek." The update for iOS and Android aims to help users find answers to search requests like "A cheap sushi place that's nearby and open now, but that I haven't been to yet."
