• WordPress Plug-In Flaw Fixed In Latest Update
    Those running a WordPress Web site and using the All in One SEO Pack plug-in will want to update to the newest version now, writes Lucian Constantin. The version released Friday fixes a glitch that could hijack the site's admin account. Constantin explains that while the Bot Blocker feature aims to detect and block spam bots, if the setting is enabled the plug-in will log all requests that were blocked and will display them on an HTML page inside the site's admin panel.
  • Belfast Telegraph Sees Likeness Of Simon Hamilton In Google Ad
    The former finance and health minister bears a striking resemblance to one of the characters used in Google's advertisement for its Digital Garage, according to the Belfast Telegraph. Social media users think so too. Among the advertisements, Google agrees to give free digital training to improve online skills. The media agency reports that some have tweeted on Twitter that another character looks similar to Sinn Fein's Mickey Brady.
  • Yahoo Buyer Might Owe Mozilla Millions
    Whatever company or entity ends up buying Yahoo might be obligated to pay Mozilla annual payments of $375 million through 2019, Recode reports, citing a contract between the two companies. The obligation apparently depends on whether or not Mozilla wants to work with the next owner of Yahoo’s assets, and was agreed to by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.
  • Google Buys Streaming Monetization Platform Anvato
    Delving deeper into the tech side of the video and broadcasting business, Google just acquired Anvato -- a platform for encoding, editing, publishing and distribution video across platforms. “The company says Anvato will join its Cloud Platform team and that Anvato’s technology will complement its efforts ‘to enable scalable media processing and workflows in the cloud,’” TechCrunch reports.
  • Google Glitch Mistakenly Sends New Site Owner Notification In Search Console
    John Mueller said during a Google’s Webmaster Office Hours that some webmasters were mistakenly receiving "new site owner notifications.” When site owners receive this, the first thing that comes to mind is the site has somehow been hacked and a hacker has added themselves to the Google Search Console account om their account, something that does seem to be happening more frequently lately, according to Jennifer Slegg. In a Twitter tweet, Mueller told marketers to double-check accounts, but not to panic. 
  • Google: EU Regulators Prepare To Issue Additional Charges
    The Wall Street Journal reports that European Union competition regulators are preparing to issue additional formal charges , likely in late July, against Google over its behavior with its shopping service. The WSJ cites people familiar with the situation. Initially, the Commission filed formal charges against Google in April 2015 for favoring its comparison-shopping service in search results.
  • Microsoft COO Leaves For Citadel Securities
    COO Kevin Turner is leaving Microsoft for a CEO job at Citadel Securities after spending 11 years at the Redmond, Wash., company. Turner will remain until the end of July, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a post Thursday. Apparently it will take more than one person to replace Turner. Nadella also announced new appointments that will cover Turner's responsibilities. 
  • Google Now on Tap Adds Translation Feature
    Google is updating Now on Tap with the ability to translate foreign languages found in any app. “On Tap can now also read QR and bar codes, as well as suggest interesting articles and videos as part of a new Discover feature,” 9To5Google reports. “The new translate feature works from any app or webpage.”

    Google said Wednesday it added new features to the Now on Tap service, which lets Android users bring Google search features to any screen with the tap of a button. When in the Chrome browser, users can now translate text from any Web page on any screen into a specific language by long pressing the home button and tapping on the "Translate this screen” card. 
  • Upload, Search For Past Snaps In Memories, A New Snapchat Feature
    Snapchat now gives users a glimpse of the past with the ability to search through memories. Memories is accessible by swiping up from Snapchat’s photo-taking feature, is one of the most complex additions in the company’s five-year history. There are limitations. Searches pull up only saved Snaps, whereas searches on Facebook Moments can include all photos stored on a phone. Paresh Dave explains.
