Google
Google Apps Marketplace got a fresh new look for Apps for Work, but it also repositioned its apps to support more work-related activities. For example, email for business with spam protection, "powerful" search and integrated calendars with no ads and 30GB of storage. Hangouts is now a business tool allowing businesses to have meetings face-to-face, although they may not sit in the same room. In fact, the company touts that 5 million businesses have gone Google apps at work.
9To5Google
The latest version of Google’s Chrome Web browser is showing off its memory efficiency. Now, as 9To5Google reports, “Google is showing off more of the performance improvements that the company has introduced in the latest version, allowing Chrome to use less memory and power on the desktop.” In fact, “It seems Google has managed to reduce the memory footprint of most sites you visit through the browser.”

Classrooms this year might get a little chattier. Google has updated its suite of cloud productivity apps, especially for mobile. One tool, typing by voice; and others, search for research and the ability to more easily see what changes different users make to the same document.
The Alliance For Open Media
Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, and Netflix, among others, have teamed up to build next-generation tools they collectively say will become available royalty-free and open-source through the Alliance for Open Media. The initial project creates a new, open royalty-free video codec specification based on the contributions from members, along with specifications for media format, and content encryption and adaptive streaming.
Amazon
Need a quick box of laundry detergent or fabric softener? Amazon lets you buy those items with a Dash Button. On Wednesday the company announced the expansion of the Dash Buttons program. The small WiFi-connected hardware devices doesn't require anyone to log onto the company's Web site, search, or see ads for other products. It lets you order the product from Amazon in a tap, not a click. Amazon says it’s adding 11 more brands to the program, and it will refund the $4.99 cost of the button to customers with their first purchase.

Google asked Web site owners Tuesday to stop serving annoying, often full-page app install ads when users click from a mobile search result to a Web site. These app install interstitials can hide a significant amount of content and prompt the user to install an app. After Nov. 1, mobile Web pages that show an app install interstitial that hides a significant amount of content on the transition from the search result page will not be considered mobile-friendly, per Google.
