• Marketers Say Email is Important, But Their Contact Data is Often Bad
    More marketers selected email as their most important marketing channel this year than any other channel, according to a survey by Experian QAS. However the survey also found that many marketers have to contend with inaccurate or duplicate customer data that can hamstring email marketing efforts. 94% of respondents suspect their customer information may be inaccurate. On average they believe 17% of their data may be bad. 29% report losing a customer because of inaccurate information.
  • Email Attack Exploits Vulnerability in Yahoo Site to Hijack Accounts
    Hackers behind a recently detected email attack campaign are exploiting a vulnerability in a Yahoo website to hijack the email accounts of Yahoo users and use them for spam, according to security researchers from antivirus vendor Bitdefender. After discovering the attack on Wednesday, Bitdefender analysts searched the spam database and found evidence that the attacks may have been occurring for almost a month. The company reported the issue to Yahoo on Wednesday but it appeared unresolved on Thursday.

    The Obama campaign has leased its massive voter database to a newly-created advocacy group called Organizing for Action (OFA). The group will use the data to back the president's agenda and raise money for "issue ads," according to an OFA spokesperson. The database - dubbed internally "the launch codes" - is unprecedented in its volume and detail, containing email addresses, mobile phone numbers, address books, social media activity and online behavioral data for millions of voters.   • SendGrid Brings Its Cloud-Based Transactional Email Infrastructure to Europe
    Cloud-based email service SendGrid has announced that it is expanding from its US hub in Boulder, Denver, San Francisco, New York and Anaheim to the UK and Germany. The company's platform is used by over 100,000 web app companies and developers including Foursquare, Pinterest, Spotify, Airbnb and Pandora, principally for transactional emails. SendGrid claims that 9 bilion emails per month are now flowing from its system.

    Inbox management tool SaneBox has announced the launch of SaneBox for Teams. The service works by putting a filter in your inbox and siphons off into a separate folder all messages that users teach it are not critical. The team version works the same way and is aimed at SMBs at a cost of $10-$25 per seat per month. The company reports that the application saves up to 100 hours per year of productivity lost to sifting through emails.

  • Marketers Say They're Shifting Focus Away From Traditional Media
    In a survey conducted by Aquent and the American Marketing Association (AMA), marketers report that they are decreasing their focus on traditional media. In fact, traditional media occupied the top 6 areas slated for a decline in focus this year by respondents, led by newspapers (32%), consumer magazines (28%) and radio (24%). Digital and direct channels are the least likely to be cut according to survey respondents.
