Comparing the emails from four different airlines, Direct Marketing News points out that while Alitalia has nice photos of its business class cabin, readers have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the email to see them, while JetBlue delivers its message more clearly with a photo of a family vacation at the top of its email. Aer Lingus' sent emails to push off season travel to Ireland, and United Airlines sent emails to promote Memorial Day travel.

Marketo CEO Phil Fernandez does not have any plans to sell his company. Despite the email and digital marketing services industry being ripe for acquisitions in the past couple of months, Fernandez said that his company would be better served combining its marketing automation technology with cloud-software providers through partnerships. Marketo went public last month and has since grown its stock value by seventy percent.

While corporate and business email accounts for only 25% of mailboxes globally, they generate the most email traffic. According to a new study from technology market research firm Radicati Group in 2012, business email inboxes generated 89 billion emails in a day and that number is expected to increase 13% every year.

More than half of Americans (52%) don't want the government reading their emails in the name of fighting terrorism, according to a new poll from the Pew Research Center. This is up from 47 percent which opposed having their emails read by the government back in 2002. While most Americans would like to keep their emails private, 56 percent of Americans don't mind the NSA collecting telephone metadata as a way to investigate terrorist threats. Only 41 percent find this practice unacceptable.

Accounting firms are increasing their email marketing volume, according to a new report. The study from Thomson Reuters' BizActions and PDI Global brands revealed that CPA firm clients sent more than 22 million email marketing messages in 2012, slightly more than were sent in 2011. These emails had an average open rate of 23.3 percent in both 2012 and 2011.

Twenty-five percent of email marketers are currently using video in email, according to a new report from The Relevancy Group, sponsored by SendStream. The report, which looks at the survey responses of 266 marketing executives, found that marketers using video in email are generating on average 40 percent higher monthly revenue than those that do not use video.

Email volume increased 11.6% in the first quarter of 2013 as compared to the same quarter in the prior year, according to a new report by Experian Marketing Services. The report, which looked at emails sent by Experian Marketing Services clients over the past two years, found that multichannel retailers had the highest gain in email volume. Seventy percent of these brands increased mailings in Q1 2013 compared with Q1 2012.

It turns out that Sweden may be affected by the latest digital spying scandal that is taking place in the United States. According to reports, emails sent to the Swedish government can be accessed by the US security services because several Swedish state agencies have their email systems linked to companies who are allegedly connected the Prism surveillance system.

According to the DMA, email volume averaged more than 3 billion messages a month. The National Email Benchmarking Report H1 2012 also revealed that social marketers are better integrating with email. In fact, 87% of social media marketers used email marketing and 61% planned to increase their email efforts.
